August 4, 2024: The Ultimate Jinx

I swear I was doing it with good intentions… When I placed my bet on the Sox to reach over their win total for the season of 61.5 games, I did it to give me a reason to root for the Sox; I’m a Cubs fan. I knew the Sox would be bad, but they could lose 100 games and I could STILL win my bet. Well, turns out that I was the ultimate jinx when it came to this bet. The Chicago White Sox lost their 20th game in a row on Sunday.

The Sox record sits at 27-87; they would have to finish the season 35-13 to win my bet… that’s funny. They may not win another game all year. They were very bad to begin with, and then they dumped guys at the deadline, so they got worse. It’s like that car crash on the other side of the expressway that everybody has to slow down to take a peek at; at this point, the Sox have everyone’s attention… you can’t look away. They are in record breaking territory, for all the wrong reasons. They’re 60 games UNDER 500 for the season; yes, 60!!! Per Jesse Rogers on Twitter, this is the earliest date into a season a team is 60 games under since the Cleveland Spiders in 1899!!! 1899!!! With their 20th loss in a row, they have reached the top 7 worst losing streaks of all time. This is the longest losing streak since 1988, 36 years with my college math; that team was the Baltimore Orioles. They lost 21 in a row. The record losing streak of 23 games is owned by the 1961 Phillies; that’s definitely in range. If you’re going to be bad, you might as well be historically bad. There is only one direction up after this season mercifully ends; you can’t possibly get worse.

Let’s talk about the worst record ever in MLB history; let’s just stick to the “modern era”, from 1901 to present. This distinguished record is owned by the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics; they went 36-117, in I guess, a 153 game season. Sheesh! In a 162 game season, that record is owned by the 2003 Detroit Tigers; they went 43-119. How bad will the Sox be? Assuming they play 500 ball from here on out, which is a prayer, they’ll finish with a 51-111 record; that’s the absolute BEST they can finish. Realistically… they win 12 more games and beat the Tigers with a 39-123 record… holy shit! I like the Twitter thing going with the manager Pedro Grifol’s jersey… they just keep adding L’s to the end of his name to match the streak. Since he’s joined the White Sox as their discount dime skipper, he’s proceeded to lead them to a 100 game under 500 record! Take out the 14 game and current 20 game losing streak, and the Sox are still 26 games under 500!!! This would still be good for the worst team in the American League. I can’t even…

I know the Cubs aren’t exactly tearing it up, but… they’re 27.5 games better than the Sox!!! For all those Chicago guys that bet on best record between the Cubs and Sox, and pay per game… break out the checkbooks Sox fans. The Sox were a franchise worst 56-106 back in 1970. Now, 54 years later, that record will be broken, smashed, crushed, obliterated… how low can they go?
