August 4, 2015: Adventureland

When was the last time you went to an amusement park?  It’d been a while for me too, until this week in Pittsburgh. Kennywood was where this streak ended.

Ever see the movie Adventureland?  Not too bad of a flick.. This place reminded me of it; my wife called it first. This place first opened in 1898, yeah, it’s older than the last cubs World Series title.  It was an outstanding time.

Being my son’s first visit to a place like this made it extra special. Seeing his face on all these rides…seeing him and my wife together on a few… It was priceless. It definitely ranked as the best day of vacation. Remember, I last left you on Monday night being washed out of my one Cubs road game of the year. We should have planned to be at Tuesday night’s game.

I did catch the last few innings after a day of fun in the sun. I got to see Jake dominate and the Cubs go to 11 over. How good has Arrieta been?  We saw this last year, for anyone who was watching. Now, it happens more regularly. I loved his comments after the game… I read them this morning at an Ohio rest stop.

He talked about dominating…that’s what his goal is. I like it.  After all, that’s what he’s been doing on the mound. The best Cubs pitcher by far, even got a hit on this night…off a 99 mph fastball. That’s pretty impressive, or as the Pirates broadcaster stated, just shows you how overrated a fastball like that is.  I mean, if a pitcher can sit on it, and turn it around, what can a hitter do?  But we’ve been through this…hitting fastballs…one of the reasons Motte is no longer our closer.

Arrieta has been the man. As I sat at breakfast this morning, I heard some phillies fans who were at the game last night say that the Pirates fans weren’t too happy. Yeah, he does that to a lot of opposing fans. Rizzo chipped in another 4 hits…should have been five had denorfia known how to read a fly ball. Great performance to start this big week a night later.

I still don’t know when they’re going to reschedule that Monday rainout that I still have the tickets to. Maybe a drive to Pittsburgh later this year?  Either way, there will be some more meaningful games played between these two teams before it’s all said and done. Maybe on that trip back I can make another stop at Kennyland, and take another spin on the Black Widow… This ride that spins you around as you’re swinging back and forth in the air…not completely flipping, but definitely going upside down. Maybe that’s what they should call Jake. He did it again Tuesday night… And per his post game comments is just getting started. And that’s good news for the Cubs…and bad news for everybody else.
