It’s like watching a train wreck… driving on the expressway, and wanting to see what happened with the accident on the other side of the expressway… just can’t look away. Besides the Cubs game already being over by the time I sat down on the couch on Tuesday night, this is the only other reason I could come up with why I tuned in again to the White Sox game. They were hosting, and getting beat by, another shitty team in the Royals.
The Sox dropped their fifth game in a row, and 10th in the last 12 games. If the empty stadium on Tuesday night at the Cell was any indication, the season has already been written off by Sox fans; the writing is on the wall. I know empty stadium jokes are commonly used against the Sox and their fans, but when the Sox are good… when they are fighting for a playoff spot, the fans will come. They were missing on Tuesday night, a beautiful night by the way; the fight is over.
Tony LaRussa tapped out before the game with some sort of medical condition. Hope he’s healthy of course, but it’s about 120 games too late for him to not manage this squad; some may say about 280 games too late. He’s the easy scapegoat, as I see many calling for Ozzie to come back all the time. Not sure about that… seeing him in the postgame studio show in his nice duds, with a World Series ring already on his finger… why would he want to get back into the shit? Why not Frank Thomas? He’s in the postgame studio too; let him manage. Folks have called for AJ Pierzynski… How about the Joes, Maddon or Girardi? Certainly have to believe that this offseason will bring a change at the manager spot; two years of the Sox championship window already in the rearview with no titles… heck, not one playoff series win.
Yes, I know the Sox are mathematically alive, but even I can tell it’s over; it sucks, let me tell you. I remember years where the Cubs were supposed to be good and/or coming off a great year, and having to watch their season ending with a thud. You watch the games, you keep hope alive, you hold onto that “mathematical” possibility, but in reality, the season is lost. I see this for the Sox right about now; I can certainly relate to that pain. The Royals thumped the lifeless Sox, although maybe that’s unfair; they did score 7 runs in this one. It was Lucas and the bullpen that were to blame in this one; one thing is for sure, there is plenty of blame to pass around.
Like I said, not sure why I have watched a bit more of the Sox than normal lately, other than the whole “Titanic” syndrome; I just made that up. I guess watching a ship sink is intriguing to me, especially when my ship is at the bottom already waiting for company…
