August 31, 2019: The Experts

Yeah, I still have a subscription to Sports Illustrated. Magazines and newspapers are a thing of the past. With everything available at your finger tips, why order a magazine and actually have to hold something physical in your hand to read the material you want to read? I’ll take it a step further: who even reads articles today? Looking for those quick blurbs, video highlights, or two liners that take only seconds to read. Who’s going to actually read a whole article? I think of the Dogman books I read to my son…the one where all the books are erased and everybody starts getting dumber. Well, I still like to read articles; I like to write more than just a blurb too. I’m seemingly in the minority in both.

So I read the article in SI about the Bears kicking situation. They were pretty critical of how Nagy was handling the whole Parkey replacement mission this offseason; unfortunately I agree in a way. Putting all this added pressure on these guys… hard enough to make a big kick without the extra scrutiny. But it is what it is, and on the other hand, maybe I like the way Nagy handled it. Maybe that any kicker who makes it through the gauntlet will be that much stronger, especially mentally, and because they made it through that, they can make it through anything. Welcome to the Bears Eddy Piniero. Only time will truly tell on that one. And whatever the result is, can we really blame it on this unorthodox kicker search this summer?

It was the NFL preview issue, where season predictions were also made. They picked the Bears to finish in last place in the division. I’m sorry, but I almost cancelled my subscription after reading that. I can’t be mad that they picked somebody else to win the division, but last place? Behind the Lions? I’m sorry, but whoever is responsible for that pick I have zero respect for. Maybe I should be thanking them for giving Nagy some bulletin board material, as if any more motivation is needed after the way last season ended. The experts huh? Give me a damn break. Last place? Ha!

I think maybe I should make my season predictions. Wait, maybe I already did that for the Bears schedule. I have to double check, but I know I didn’t do it for the entire NFL. If some asshole can slop their picks together and have the Bears finishing last, I can’t possibly look worse. Of course I’m a homer, but seriously…if you think the Bears are going to finish in last place, you ought to get smacked. Yet, this is the NFL, and anything can happen from year to year. With injuries being such a big part of the game, if the right guy or guys get injured, the experts may get lucky. For the Bears, if Mitch were to go down…

Enough talking about it. Enough of the predictions. Way too much of the preseason. We’re less than a week away from the real deal. I can’t wait. Bear Down!
