August 31, 2016: An Event

posted in: Cubs | 1

It’s must watch TV at this point.  Yes, you may feel a bit tired of the regular season already… with a magic number of 16 before the calendar turned to September.  But, if you’re not watching the Cubs right now, you are truly missing something.  It has really become an event.

Look no further then Wednesday night at Wrigley.  You will see things you’ve never seen before… like our phenomenal SS making an easy error on the first batted ball of the game.  Yeah, I’ll get to that other play.  Next batter hit what looked like a sure double into the left field corner, but again, something rare happened.  Jorge Soler made an outstanding catch.  OK, maybe that’s a bit unfair, but Jorge isn’t the fleetest of foot out there.  I would rank him ahead of Soriano as far as left field prowess, but overall…. I’m sure he will be a late game defensive replacement candidate.  He made an outstanding catch last night.  Next up, was a taylor made double play… with one twist.  The takeout of Tommy LaStella at second base.  The takeout itself wasn’t the twist, it was who was in the middle of the play… that same guy who was making his first appearance in Wrigley after a long winding road of some strange events.  This was all in the first half of the first inning!!!

To Tommy for a second… it’s the talk of sports radio and the papers.  Everybody has an opinion on it, and yep, you guessed it, so do I.  I’ve said it in previous blogs… I think he was an idiot for the way he reacted after being sent down to the minors.  He had to realize that he was a sure call up in September when the rosters expanded.  He almost blew it.  He finally came to his senses, reported to the minors, and is now back up with the big club for the stretch, maybe historic, run.  He got lucky.

He got lucky that Theo and Jed and Joe are who they are.  Another management individual may have sent him packing immediately.  This management crew is different.  They look at every situation a little differently… each is unique, as it should be… every individual is unique.  I support this theory 100%.  Being in a management role myself, I’ve had to deal with different situations.  Whether it’s somebody being late, somebody needing time off… it’s not just a hard, rigid policy one way or another.  You take into account the facts, the individual situation and position, and you make a FAIR decision.  It’s not always important to be just consistent… but consistently fair.  They made what they thought, based on all the facts, some of which we do not, or may never know, the fair decision; the best decision for both Tommy AND the team.  Are you really going to doubt Theo, Jed, and Joe?  I’m not.  I’m keeping it moving.  Welcome back Tommy.

Back to the game… if you’re watching night in night out, you are seeing the MVP of the major leagues play, and my, my, is he zoned in right now.  KBoom went deep again in the first inning of the ball game.  Again… this is all happening in the first inning!

So I missed an inning or two after that, but then settled in for the rest of the game.  I had rewound the game a minute to show my wife the Dexter Fowler charity work from yesterday… paying off like 40 people’s layaway charges at KMart.  How cool is that?  So I was behind a bit… On Twitter, I saw Tremendous Catch by Russell… I got a text from my brother simply saying.. Wow.  The bases were loaded, Polanco was up, the game was in the balance… I was ready to see something great.  Yeah, it lived up to the hype. It has to be one of the plays of the year… just… flat… out… awesome.  I feel like sending another thank you card to the Oakland A’s.  WHOA!!!!!!

Yeah, so you may miss something if you’re not watching.  Get out to Wrigley if you can… be part of this event.  This is the best baseball team that we may have ever seen in those Cubbie unis.  Tune in.  A lot of people did… I saw something that this was very highly rated locally… I’m sure ESPN did OK on the national ratings too.  I just can’t keep from smiling when I talk about this team.  This feels great.  Go Cubs!

Soler made a great catch, but he will definitely be getting replaced defensively late in games.
As for tommy, who knows what actually went on or was said. And yes, we cannot question theo, jed, and joe. But this Cubs team does not need any more distractions than they will already have. Tommy needs to keep his big boy pants on and realize that this team, this year, is way bigger than any one guy. Yes, he was welcomed back, but I bet he will be shipped right after the year. There is no place on this Cubs team for “I” guys. This is a team…possibly, the team! Recognize your roll tommy and fall back!
As for russell, WOW! What a damn run and catch! Get his first gold glove ready. He is more than deserving of that honor!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
