August 30, 2024: What About Keepers?

posted in: Bears | 0

OK, I have to talk Fantasy Football for a minute. Last week was the auction draft; I wasn’t that happy with those results considering I had money left to spend… didn’t get my big guys; hopefully still be OK. This week brought the 2nd draft of the year. It’s keeper time!

My keepers coming into this year’s draft were not that strong. Let’s just start with the worst one and go from there. Alexander Mattison… and I have him for ANOTHER year!!! The plan worked actually. I picked him up off waivers for $100, figuring Cook would be gone last year, and he’d be the starter; that’s exactly what happened. Only problem… he sucked, and now he’s backup RB in Vegas; hey, at least he isn’t Myles Gaskin, one of my keepers from last year. Mike Williams and Dalton Schultz are in their final years under contract with my team; not great, but not horrible… I think. I like to keep guys later in the draft, so I have my first few round picks; Williams is now with the Jets and Aaron… maybe he does well? I kept Dalton with the Cowboys, then he ended up with the Texans… great…. GREAT! Yes, CJ was good, and Dalton has a chance to be OK. Finally, my best keeper for 2 more years, is RB James Cook. The starting RB in Buffalo where their top 2 WRs are gone… I like him to have a big year.

So what do I do THIS year? Well, I was sure one would be Tank Dell, in his 14th round slot; he got hurt last year, but… he’s back, so I kept him. He does have some competition for targets with Nico, Stefon, and Dalton as mentioned above, but… he seemed to have a connection with Stroud, and has a ton of value keeping him in the 14th round. Hopefully he stays healthy and has a solid season. My other one was going to be another WR. My options were DJ Moore in the 3rd round, Terry McLaurin in the 4th round, and Jaxon Smith Njigba in the 6th round. Each of them was sort of around their expected draft position, and since I already had McLaurin as a keeper previously, I locked up DJ Moore in the 3rd. Once I rounded up everybody else’s keepers, and loaded them in, we were ready for the draft.

I got my guys early, with AJ Brown and Cooper Kupp; now I needed some RBs, but first… a QB… Joe Burrow, was surprised he came to me in the 4th. 3 of my next 4 picks were RBs with Mostert, Edwards, and Dowdle. The other pick was another TE with Bowers, hopefully a future keeper from the 9th round. My last pick other than my defense and kicker, was Will Levis… a QB I like this year, hopefully my keeper from the 13th round.

Two drafts down, one to go. Saturday is the family draft, with my son and his cousins getting in the mix. It’s an in-person draft; that’s always a lot of fun. In-person drafts are really the only way to go; we used to do that… we need to bring that back! Will report back soon… good luck!
