For the first time in years, maybe ever, I have 2 fantasy football teams going. We had the first year keeper draft last week. Love the concept of building my team for the long haul; hate the snake draft. It was a handful of years ago that we went auction; once you go auction, you never go back… at least that’s the way I feel. This Thursday night was our auction draft.
I had crammed a bit for the keeper draft, but didn’t do much in the week since then. I did glance through some articles on the way home from work on Thursday; I felt pretty good about what I was going to do. I had a plan, and unlike a snake draft, where your choices are limited based on your draft position, and on who takes who where, you can execute. Sure, you can’t lock in on too many players; you will overpay and will get burned in the long run. But you do have to overpay, make no mistake, to get your guy. If you don’t overpay, you’ll end up like one of the guys in our league who had $70 left over… that’s unheard of.
My plan started with the fact that I was going to get one of the top 3 backs. My number one back was Kamara; I have a history with him. Barkley was brought up first; I was in on him, but didn’t get him. Then came Elliott, Beckham, McCaffrey, and Chubb; I was in on McCaffrey, but came up short there. That brought my pick, and the moment of truth. Would I get Kamara at all costs? The answer was yes, and it was the most anybody paid for any player at $71. I told myself $66 would be my limit, but forged ahead. I got my guy; one down.
I wanted to get a top WR, and unlike other years, a top TE. The article I read coming home from work told me to take Mike Evans; I listened, and got him for $33. Kelce went for $43, Ertz for $29, but my guy, who was the 3rd TE brought up, was Kittle; $34 later I had both a top 3 RB and TE… and a top 10 WR. My core was solid; now to piece in the rest.

Golladay went to the same high school as I did, so I made an exception, but the real reason was the value I got there. $14?!?! You need some of these guys, especially after I went big for my top 3 picks. I thought AJ Green at $8 was a mega deal, even though he’ll miss the first couple weeks. Christian Kirk at $6 was a great deal too. Wrapping up my wide outs as Tre’Quan Smith at $1… the Saints #2 WR. Thank you.
My RBs after Kamara are Cohen at $9, Tevin Coleman at $10, that Cowboy Pollard and Justice Hill for a $1 each. Pretty happy about that stable. I did draft a backup TE for $1 with Mark Andrews; couldn’t pass that up. Got my kicker Pineiro and my D the Chiefs for a $1 each; rarely pay more than that for those 2 positions. Oh yeah… what about QB?
Trubisky baby!!!! I scooped up Darnold as a backup. I know, I know… taking a bit of a risk there, but come on… you don’t think Mitch is going to heave the ball 40 times a game, with more weapons on offense than we’ve had in a long time, getting better in his 2nd year in Nagy’s offense. Come on.. if there’s anybody who thinks this is a real possibility it’s us Bears fans… stupid ass Sports Illustrated picking us to finish 7-9 in last place in the division. That guy should be canned ASAP.
But back to my team… very satisfied. I guess the QB is the biggest question mark, but I surely wasn’t going to chuck up $40 for Mahomes… I just love the auction action. I’m ready to get this show on the road. Going once…
