OK, back to baseball. I may have mentioned this before, but I hate the St. Louis Cardinals. It’s always lovely to see them lose, especially when it’s at the hands of my Cubs… especially when it is hurting their playoff chances. Unfortunately, way too often, it’s the Cubs trying to play spoilers to the Cardinals good season. Maybe we’ll see the tables turned in that scenario soon. If Soler has anything to say about it, it will be really soon.
Have you seen his 3 home runs? He didn’t get shorted on any of them. His first one in Cincy in his first AB was to dead center, just like the first of his two tonight. His 3rd home run and 2nd on the night in St. Louis was an absolute bomb to deep left field. I guess I’m getting a taste of the excitement that Abreu has brought to Sox fans. Soler has been absolutely crushing the ball so far, and although Baez has struck out more times than we can count, he has shown his power too. With Bryant waiting in the wings for next April, the Cubs are starting to look like a major league team.
What’s up with this latest wave of Cuban players? From Puig to Abreu to Soler, these guys can flat out play. Let’s not forget about Jose Fernandez and Cespedes, and also the other 2 Cuban players for the Sox in Alexei and Tank. The players coming out of Cuba are better and better as of late. They are stars. Maybe that’s why Boston ponied up for Rusney Castillo… who wouldn’t want to get in on this action? I’m glad the Cubs participated and signed Soler. He did have that incident in the minor leagues where he flipped out, but as long as he can keep his head in the game, and of course stay healthy, we may have another piece of the future in place.
I’m feeling genuinely excited by the Cubs again. They’re certainly not playing like a last place team. With the win in St. Louis on Friday, they’ve guaranteed an over .500 month of August. Teams should be worried about playing the Cubs this last month of September. I hope they ruin some teams playoff chances, in particular St. Louis and Milwaukee. They have 5 more games vs St Louis and 6 more games vs Milwaukee. The Cubs may have a say in the way the Central is won, even if they aren’t in the conversation… this year.

It’s not going to be 2016; it’s next year. The Cubs will challenge for a playoff spot next year. Mark my words. Yeah, I’m drinking the kool aid and going off on one of my dream sequences where I see the Cubs raising the World Series trophy, and no it’s not a commercial for a video game. It’s all about dreaming; keeping the dream alive, any dream. This specific dream is one that I hope to see a happy ending to soon. The plan is starting to show promise. Maybe all the stuff Theo and Jed sold us on isn’t BS. Maybe they knew what they were doing after all.
Most likely, the Cubs will be going to a 6 man rotation in this final month, as they start to make some early decisions on their rotation for next year. Wood, Arrieta, Hendricks, Wada, Turner, and either Doubront or Straily will be the starters next month. They may bring back Edwin if he gets healthy for a couple starts. Out of those 7 pitchers, if we could solidify 4 starters, and add a stud (Lester.. and yeah, I’m riding with that until it does or doesn’t happen), the pitching will come together.
Being a Cub fan isn’t easy, but there is no other choice for me. No, I’m not going to jump on any other bandwagon. No, I’m not going to become more of a Sox fan than a Cubs fan. This will never happen. The ultimate reward for Cubs fans is still out there; it’s still something we dream about, and that’s exciting. We still have our day to look forward to. Some say it will never come, and I say to them, stay tuned. We’re about to find out really soon..
