Well, the series pretty much ended as expected with the White Sox crushing the hapless Cubs. Hey, they did show some fight in the first 2 games, winning one of them, but the mismatch on the field was pretty obvious. The Sox looked like world beaters against the Cubs on Sunday; now they need to do this against the good MLB teams.
The Sox will get their chance, that’s for sure. Honestly, they have as good a shot as anybody. They will be the first team to punch their playoff ticket playing in the AL Central, and when you get in, anything can happen. Of course, you need good starting pitching. I think Keuchel saw his way off the playoff roster with his opening game performance against the AAA Cubs, but with a top 4 of Lynn (although he did get shellacked too), Rodon, Giolito, and Cease, that ain’t too bad. We know about the Sox bullpen, and yes, they have had their issues, just like every bullpen does, but the arms are there. Will it be enough?
Then of course the offense, which was on full display on Friday and Sunday. When they’re going, just like any offense, they look pretty impressive. They’ll only need to score one more than the other team in each playoff game, duh! If the pitching can hold up, the offense may not be asked to do much. With all the different weapons in that lineup, even if half the guys are struggling, you got the other half to do damage, and really, it comes down to timely hitting. The experience helps too. They did get their feet wet last year, which should be helpful come this year. And you can’t get more experience in the dugout from a manager, considering LaRussa has been managing since before helmets were required. Like I said, the Sox have as good a shot as anybody.

But noooo… just like the hope we had at the beginning of this year, when the Cubs were in first place, which seems like years ago, the Cubs delivered another kick in the balls. I didn’t expect them to be competitive against the Sox, but they were for a minute. At the end, the talent on the field won out, as it usually does. I was hoping because it was the Cubs Sox matchup, and the worse team usually fares pretty well, that the Cubs could pull it out. Nope.
It’s time to lean on that familiar line… wait until next year. Baseball season has been over for all intensive purposes on the north side ever since the day of the massacre. Now, it’s just a matter of playing out the string… seeing if any of these minor leaguers can stick around and be productive big leaguers. It’s time to hope the Cubs do something in the offseason; how long before they bring in a big name star? Considering we dumped 3 of our big name stars, now we have to act like a big market team and get some more. This should happen this offseason, but maybe because of the time required to rebuild, which is a load of bullshit, the Cubs front office will wait a year or two to spend big money… how long will this misery last?
Been there done that, with the misery I mean. We went through years of it, decades of it. I guess we can handle the rest of this season and a couple more, right? We shouldn’t have to is the point. Cubs fans should never have to suffer again; I think we completed that requirement. To have a team and then watch the front office blow it up feels worse. 30 more games to go…
