August 27, 2022: Keeping That Chip

posted in: Bears | 0

Did you watch the Bears final preseason game on Saturday night? I didn’t; I don’t watch preseason, but… I did see what happened. I did watch the highlights. I know these are meaningless games, but it’s better to look good than bad, right? “It’s only preseason”… I get that; this one doesn’t count in the standings. Well, the next one does. Let’s be patient Bears fans. Let’s keep that chip on our shoulder. No need to start cashing that in now; we have ways to go…

I don’t watch ESPN either; I see all the negative talk about our Bears though. Whether it’s the last place finish in the division, the worst team in football, the worst offense in football, zero weapons for Fields, yada, yada, yada… I love it!!! Please keep talking like that. From what I’ve read about Eberflus, from what I’ve read about the effort of the boys… that’ll play really nicely. It doesn’t sound like the Bears will get outhustled this year. We may not have as much talent as other teams; I will not dispute that. Yet, if you’re bringing your A effort every game, you’re generally going to hold your own. Sure, you may still get your ass handed to you by superior teams; we’re only talking about a handful though… I’m staying quietly confident in my Bears 6.5 over the win total bet, even more so the more negative stuff I read.

I know we want to shove it up those critics’ asses. Retweet BS takes, how you like me now type stuff, showing them how wrong they were. Don’t do it yet. A preseason win is meaningless; we’ve been over this. Still, we see with our own two eyes how Fields looked in this one, and it’s hard NOT to get excited; I’m excited. It’s OK to be excited, to be hopeful about our future. And yes, people will hate… that’s what people do; let them. Let them keep talking. I guarantee Eberflus will use all of this material to hype up the boys. These players listen; I hope it bothers them. I hope they have that “I’ll show you” attitude. There have been Bears teams in the past that barely had a pulse; teams that made me feel like I cared more than they do. Well, I do care… a lot… but if these players care more than the die-hard Bears fans, if they bring those high motors, if they develop their games… Let’s just say, I’m looking forward to when the real games start in a couple weeks.

But yes, it’s a talent based league; this effort will only get you so far. It’s a great starting point though. I don’t think any of us is thinking Super Bowl this year by any means (although it’s always deep inside me). The more talented teams will eventually win out; the Bears are NOT in that group. This will be on the front office to improve this in the next couple years. For now, it’s time to embrace who we have. If Fields shows progress this year, if the offensive line can block better than they did last year, if Montgomery runs like he can, if one of our receivers has a better than expected season, if the defense plays above average… if, if, if… not trying to oversimplify here… I’m just trying to say it’s possible; it’s possible for the Bears to have a good season.

For now, even after the show Fields put on in this last preseason game vs the Browns, we’re still 0-0. That can all change Week 1 at home vs the Niners. We can start talking then, but I’m not just interested in 1 win; I’m not just interested in seeing Fields’ talent shine through in a pre-season game. I want it all. It will come, it will come… patience folks. There will be one day when all those people will be kissing our asses. I can’t wait for all of them to pucker up. Let’s keep that chip on our shoulder until then; I know it’s hard. Our time will come. Ready for the games to count; Bear Down!!!
