August 27, 2014: Same Boat?

With 31 games to play in the regular season, the Cubs and Sox have the same exact record.  Are you surprised?  At 59-72, both teams are on the way to 90 losses this season.  Thankfully, this baseball season is almost over; thankfully, we’ll be able to start thinking about next year.

We’re gettting a sneak preview of next year with the Cubs right now.  Currently on a 4-game winning streak, the Cubs are coming off a sweep of the first place Baltimore Orioles, and a win against the mighty Johnny Cueto.  The Cubs are playing well.  The pieces for next year are falling into place, with another one joining the club today.  Jorge Soler will make his Cubs debut tonight.  He’ll join the other pieces of the projected 2015 starting lineup.  Rizzo, Castro, Baez, Alcantara, Castillo for now, surprising Coghlan, and another prospect named Kris Bryant who’ll be joining them come next April, make up a pretty good looking MLB lineup.  When we look at the pitching, we look at Arrieta being a solid #2, with rookies Hendricks and Wada possibly taking up 2 rotation spots.  That leaves Wood, Straily, & Turner to vie for that 5th spot.  The Cubs still need some pitching.  The Cubs still need a #1.  If Lester decides to come here, and that’s a big IF, the rotation looks a whole hell of a lot better.  The bullpen has been better as of late, but it would be nice to add an arm there.  Now people are saying that the Cubs can compete in 2016, but I say, why not 2015?

Switching gears to the South Side, where are the Sox going?  Losers of 7 straight, they at least did something by dumping Beckham.  I remember when he first came up he was tabbed a future hall of famer; well, that didn’t happen.  Similar to Felix Pie and Corey Patterson, this prospect fizzled out.  The Sox have some pieces in place on offense with Abreu, Garcia, and Eaton.  There are question marks there, like anywhere else.  Abreu has had a rookie season for the ages, while Eaton continues to struggle with injuries.  That has been one of the knocks on him all along.  When he’s been on the field, he’s been very solid.  Then there’s Garcia, who missed almost the whole season.  How would the season have looked with a healthy Avisail Garcia all year?  He would have added some wins no doubt, but then there’s the pitching.  The bullpen has been a complete disaster.  A combination of trading away the closer, injuries, and every single person blowing a lead at some point, repeatedly, this bullpen is the number one reason the Sox are where they are at.  The starting rotation is led by Chris Sale; not many #1’s I’d rather have.  Quintana is solid.  Rodon may start with the club next year.  The Sox, like the Cubs, need some pitching.  At least they have a number 1 guy…  The bullpen needs some serious help, and another starter or two would help too.  If the Sox can cleanup their pitching, well, they need some pieces on offense too.  The Sox really need some help.  Maybe they’re not as far away as it seems to me…

So, which position would you rather be in?  It goes back to the question I have asked many times this year:  Who will win a World Series next?  By next, I mean which Chicago team, and I know those are big words coming from a city with potentially 180 combined losses at the end of the year.  Baseball changes quickly from year to year.  It’s very possible that both teams will make a run at the playoffs next year.  Again, wishful thinking maybe, but that’s what I do.  Personally, I’m happy to see the Cubs making progress, and am very excited about next year.  I wonder what all the experts will say leading into next year.  That division the Cubs play in is one of the toughest in baseball.  Where will they rank them?  Where will the Sox be ranked?  With the Royals finally living up to the hype, and Tigers always up there, where do the Sox fall in?

Let’s get through the rest of the year, and gain some positive momentum.  Let’s see the young players on both sides of town.  Let’s get a sneak preview of 2015.  There is excitement leading up to every other season with the Bears, Bulls, and Hawks this year.  Let’s feel some of that leading into next year for baseball.  I’ll be watching Soler make his debut tonight, and report on that soon… The next few days will be dedicated to Fantasy Football.  Are you ready for some football?
