It was Friday night, just about my son’s bed time. His first week of kindergarten was in the books. As we were getting ready, he asks me: “Are the Cubs on”? I said, yes. He said, I want to watch them. I just smiled and said of course. After all, we had made it to the weekend, he could stay up a bit later, and he WANTS to watch the Cubs. How awesome is that?
We sit together and he cheers for the Cubs players at bat. He knows most of the team, but sometimes mixes them up, like Javy LaStella or Tommy Baez. He tells me he wants them to hit a home run. When the other team bats, he roots for the strikeout. He knows how to get me mad too, like saying, let’s go Phillies. I act like I’m going to put him in a headlock; he changes up his tune. This is just the beginning.
I’m trying to lay the foundation. Yes, of course there are more important matters; my wife and I try to cover them all. But rooting for our teams together…that’s pretty damn cool too. Up to this point, he hasn’t really had a choice. For him to actually want to watch it, time for a fist pump and bump.
He knows the Cubs; he knows the other teams are garbage, except for the White Sox. I won’t put them down to him; I tell him, they’re ok. We’ve been to Sox Park too, and had a ton of fun in the Fundamentals section. I thought, if he wanted a Sox shirt, I’d get it for him. Not a jersey, but a t-shirt. He hasn’t wanted one yet. Yeah, but all other teams are garbage; that goes for all other sports too. It started there.

We were in Bed Bath and Beyond, and they had a bunch of NFL mugs for sale. Of course I pointed to the Bears one, to make sure he knew who our team was there. I also pointed to that green and gold helmet with the big G on it. I told him that the G stood for Garbage. I remind him each time we see it. That’s basic man; Chicago die hard 101.
He loves the Bulls too, and is pretty upset about his favorite player being traded. He says he’s a Timberwolves fan now. I told him, he can root for them, but not when they play the Bulls. I’d be ok with a Butler Twolves tshirt; no jersey, but tshirt. He also knows Lebron James when he sees him; I’ve told him his name is caca head. Moving into 102…
Yes, even the Blackhawks…he can name many of them, although we’ll have to brush up this year. They are after all the team that brought him the first championship of his life in 2013, and another in 2015. Yeah, and he only had to wait 4.5 years to see the Cubs win it all; I’m very happy about that. 3 titles in 5 years isn’t too shabby; that’ll be a tough pace to keep up.
I grew up watching sports with my dad and brother. Now, my son gets to grow up watching with me. It’s what we do. It’s one of our things. I feel like the foundation is set; now it’s time to build upon it. Another die hard in the making… maybe one day he helps me with this blog…maybe this can turn into our family business. Until then, cheering together for our teams will be plenty. I’m very, very happy with that.

The die-hard Chicago fan foundation…think we got that laid pretty thick. Cubs, Bears, Bhawks, Bulls! The sox are not enemy #1, but they are definitely last on this list…not a team to hate, though. I was fine with the sox winning their title. Yes, it made their fans even more annoying to us Cubs fans, but now that we have ours, please. Chicago sports is a big part of the tv viewing in our house, especially when playoff time rolls around…must watch games! It is pretty cool that the Bhawks and Cubs have won 4 titles in the last 8 years. Now for a Bears and Bulls championship run. How cool was it to watch games together growing up? Having parties for big games, going to actual games, and just loving our teams. That same foundation is being laid with our families, and I would not have it any other way!
