August 25, 2019: Not Fun

Well, I avoided it as long as I could, hoping they’d finally win a game against the Nationals.  Yeah, so what… you like rehashing losses?  I don’t.  But getting swept… at home… that’s especially not fun, and something we’ll have to talk about eventually.  There’s no time like the present.  Let’s get this out of our system before we head back on the road (ugh!) to New York of all places, playing against one of the hottest teams in the league with one of the best starting pitching staffs in the league.  OK, let’s review this series first before we start losing our mind about the next one.

This was one of those weekends where I didn’t get to watch a lot of Cubs baseball, and in this case, that was a very good thing.  No need to ruin my weekend over some baseball games right?  Well, I saw what happened in each game, and it wasn’t very good.  I couldn’t believe it.  Anibal Sanchez?  Really?  1 hit in 8 plus innings.  Well, that ain’t going to get it done.  It’s more of the same.  It’s a common theme in many of the Cubs losses… a loaded offense that can’t produce runs.  And our pitcher… Lester… another bad outing for Jon.  I saw some poll the other day if you had to pick one of the Cubs starters to win 1 game, who would it be?  Lester was leading the poll… he wouldn’t get my vote at this point.

It wouldn’t be Quintana either, although he’s been really good as of late.  Friday loss?  Shake it off, bounce back and win the series.  Well, Q didn’t pitch well.  And that loaded Cubs offense… only 2 runs.  This isn’t going to end well is it?  I saw the highlight of Ian Happ striking out looking at a ball out of the zone with the bases loaded.  Lots of people complaining about that one; it wasn’t as bad as the Tony Kemp one.  I’ve always been told, and in turn tell my kids, if you have 2 strikes, and it’s close… you got to take a hack, period.  Happ didn’t.  Yes, it was out of the zone, but it wasn’t so far off the plate.  Don’t leave it in the umpire’s hands.  Don’t let a game be decided by one strike call either while we’re at it.

Sunday completed the sweep in the wrong direction in Wrigley off all places.  Yeah, we’ve come to expect this on the road, unfortunately, but at home?!?!  It didn’t help the Cardinals kept winning, and now, after Sunday’s affair, the Cubs sit 2.5 games out of first place.  Is it time to focus on the wild card at this point, where the Cubs hold the 2nd position?  You know who the first wild card team is right?

I have to wrap my head around this… maybe it’s going to take more time.  There is no time though, that’s the thing.  Baseball doesn’t stop… 162 baby.  Games almost every day.  Put this one behind you, get on the field, and start a new story.  Another week and we’re in September.  So what’s it going to be Cubbies?
