August 25, 2015: Walking Off

posted in: Cubs | 3

How great was that?  There sure feels like there is something magical going on at Wrigley these days.  The Cubs won another thriller, their 5th in a row, as they improved to 21 games over .500.

They are now 6.5 games up on the Giants for that 2nd wild card.  They’re heading there for a 3 game series starting tonight.  Again, you want to make sure we solidify our playoff position, but also keep chasing the teams ahead of us.  The Cards 6.5 up, and the Pirates 3 up, keep winning too.  We will see them in September; that may be when the NL Central and playoff positions are decided.  Until then, we gotta keep doing what we’re doing… keep pushing… and let the cards fall where they may  (Cards fall…)

Yesterday was a brilliant pitching duel between the reigning AL Cy Young award winner Corey Kluber and present big bank Cub Jon Lester.  He earned his pennies in this one, coming one out from a complete game shutout.  The Indians tied it up at 1 in the top of the ninth, which set the stage for the dramatic bottom of the 9th.

This was #12.  The most walkoff wins this year.  Bryant took the first pitch curve ball out to right center.  The place went nuts!  It is so fun to watch right now; I tune in to watch the highlights over and over again.  ESPN led off with baseball last night… the Phillies and Mets, which was a pretty cool game, but then went to NFL preseason.  Who cares?  This Cubs team and their current streak, 20-4 over the last 24 games, should be top news… national too.  But oh well… Comcast has me covered.

Each of the Cubs are taking turns being heroes.  Bryant & Lester are the most recent.  The team just finds a way to win, whether it’s a shootout or a tight one run victory, they find a way.  When the Indians tied it in the 9th, didn’t you still have a good feeling going into the bottom?  I did.  You start to have that confidence.  You start to believe.  You’ve seen them comeback a number of times, you’ve seen a number of walk off wins, you start to feel it.  I definitely feel it.

I’m fully enjoying this ride, and believe this is only the first time on this ride.  It’s going to be like that roller coaster you go on over and over again.  Walking off with wins is the most exciting play in baseball, so it makes sense that the Cubs lead the majors in that department.  They have become the most exciting team… yeah, I’m biased, but with all that young talent, the comeback wins, the walkoff wins, the fact that it’s the Cubs doing this…  find me a more exciting team.  The stale old Cardinals?  The Pirates… ok a little better.  The Cubs are bringing that excitement to the park every day… and now they take it on the road.

How many Cub fans will be in the house this week on the West Coast?  I know LA will be packed with Cubs fans; I’m sure we’ll represent out in Frisco too.  I’d love to fly out there this week.  You want to be a part of this as much as you can.  With the homestretch in front of us, get ready for more excitement.  Is next year this year?  It sure feels like it.

Awesome! There is no die in this team. The balloon gets deflated in the top of the 9th after an excellent pitcher’s duel, but the Cubs know they have a last at bat. 12 walk off Wins now and a 62% winning percentage in 1run games. The Cubs are getting that close game experience, and we can only hope it carries over when it matters most. The Cubbie blue train is overflowing and heading west…keep that momentum and steam roll the gmen and the duck, dip, dive, dodgers. GO CUBS GO!!!

I remember when you could have won the NL central with a .500 record. This race is going to be won be the healthiest team. With Soler going down, it will test the depth of this team. I’m not not worried. CUBS are 39-26 at home and 33-25 away, which means they are going to play the same way whether they are at home or not…..Lets give some dues to Maddon and the coaching staff for creating a level of stability to maintain such an effort. Remember, this is a very young team and yet we have not heard of issues inside the ball club. Which is rare b/c certain personalities clash in the opposite direction.

Lets see how they respond to 3 in SF and 3 in LA…4-2 in my opinion.

    Go CUBS!
