Talk about perfect timing… David Bote knows when to hit a home run. I can recall every one of them, and every one of them was meaningful. Ok, every time the ball leaves the yard it’s big, but Bote’s home runs were all really big. Let’s go over a quick history of Bote, or better yet, the history of Boat in commemoration of the nickname weekend.
I actually do remember his first one. It came against the Tigers in Wrigley on July 4th. It tied the game. I guess out of all the home runs he hit, this one would be the least important. But, it was his first career one; that’s pretty big. I remember listening on the radio, thinking, who the heck is this guy? We would soon all get very familiar with him.
I was lucky enough to be there for his second one. That was the game I got the last minute free tickets. It came 22 days after his first one; this one was a bit more momentous. Trailing by two runs heading to the ninth inning against the Dbacks, Bote came through with a big 2 run shot to tie it. The place went bananas…as we were still celebrating, and as the meeting on the mound ended, Rizzo ended the game with the second half of the back to back jacks. But we needed Bote’s first…that allowed Rizzo’s to be the game winner.
His third career home run would be the most famous…for now. That of course was the walk off grand slam against the Nationals on Sunday night. I couldn’t even tell you how many times I’ve watched the replay since then. My son likes to watch it before he goes to bed…at least two times per night. It has to be one of the most memorable home runs of the regular season in the entire MLB, and of course for the Cubs. He wasn’t done yet.

His third one was 17 days after his second. He didn’t wait as long for his 4th. It was a simple two run shot 10 days later in the fifth inning of the Cubs Tigers game in Detroit, yet it was very significant. It not only gave the Cubs the lead, the Cubs were on a three game losing streak; they were also on a five game streak of scoring only one run. He broke that one, and eventually the losing streak as the Cubs beat the Tigers. They haven’t lost since.
A mere two days later is where we sit, and Bote struck again. After Murphy hit a solo go ahead homer in the 8th, Strop gave up the tying home run in the top of the 9th. Have no fear, Bote is here. It wasn’t in the bottom of the 9th, but Bote spiced it up with an extra inning walk off homer this time. Yep, another no doubter gave the Cubs their 3rd straight win.
This kid has got it. Do you think he’s done yet? I don’t. If you’re asking me for a guy I’d want at the plate in a big moment, I’d tell you Bote is my guy. Sure, Baez, Rizzo, Schwarby have all hit big ones; I’d feel fine with them at the plate too. But at this very moment, the guy who came out of nowhere, Mr Mojo would be my choice. I’m not saying he needs to play every day; I’m not saying he’ll be a starter next year. But what I am saying is in a big moment this year, the NLDS, NLCS, or the ultimate, I’d love to see Bote at the plate in a big spot. Only then could he top that walk off grand slam. Can’t wait to see it! Go Cubs!

Get on the BOAT! Man has Bote been good. He has filled in for KB pretty damn well. Of course the Cubs miss KB and what he can do, but Bote has helped the Cubs stay afloat and on top of the nl. His walk off homers have been aWesome, especially that grand slam walk off…amazing! Bote has definitely made himself a spot on the playoff roster. In my eyes, he has earned it. Not sure I would choose him out of all the Cubs to take a clutch at bat, but I would definitely feel confident walking him out there if that is what Joe chooses. Thanks for the walk off memories, Bote! Save me a spot on that BOAT! GO CUBS GO!!!
