Where do we begin? Where does it end? The list of awesome Cubs keeps growing. Besides Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo battling for MVP votes, and each of our 5 starters putting up crazy numbers, there are other players on this team that have stepped up. Today’s pick… now introducing Addison Russell.
I remember it clearly. Driving back home from a 4th of July party when the news of the trade broke. I had actually heard of Russell before then; he was a highly touted prospect for a long time. When the Cubs traded Samardzjia and Hammel for Addison (and McKinney and Straily), I did have mixed feelings. I didn’t want the Cubs giving up on that year, but I did think we got the better of the deal. McKinney and Straily are both gone, Samardzjia is back in the NL, Hammel is back with the Cubs, and Addison is turning into an All Star.
Oh wait a second… he was voted an All Star this year for the first time. Out of the Cubs 7 All Stars, he was the one that didn’t really deserve to be there, based on his numbers at the time. Do you think Addison remembers those conversations? Sitting here watching him go deep again… 5 home runs in 5 road games on this trip thus far… it appears the kid is coming into his own. Maybe he’s out to prove those critics wrong.
He’s always been solid defensively. I knew, seeing him play a handful of games last year, that we had our SS of the future. I knew that Starlin would never play SS for us again. He is that good defensively at SS. Did you see the play last night? I think it was timed at 108 mph… Russell snagged this screamer on one hop, popped up to his feet (I love when he does that… it’s like instant), and fired a throw across to Rizzo to get his man; how many bad throws does he rip off? Not many. Seeing him play with Baez at 2B gives me chills. With Rizzo and Bryant at the corners typically, that is quite the infield of the future. Oh yeah, Zobrist still has some left in the tank too.
Now, he is turning it loose at the dish. Addison is crushing the ball. After his 2 run bomb Tuesday night in San Diego, the kid has 82 RBIs. Yeah, 82! He also has 19 home runs, coming in 3rd behind Bryzzo. He is stepping to the plate now in the top of the 7th… hold on. It’s a must see at bat; only a pop up this time though.

Something else to remember… he missed the entire NLCS last year. I believe he got hurt on that triple against St. Louis in the NLDS. I’m not saying he would have turned the series around, but it would have been nice to have him; it will be nice to have him this time around.
The Cubs are about to win their 80th game of the season. That will be good for 35 games above 500, a 13.5 game lead in the division, and a 7 game lead on the Nationals for best record in the NL. I just saw that the 2016 MLB playoff schedule was released. You can start penciling in the Cubs for the NLDS at the bare minimum. Of course, only making it there, would be a disappointment. Only making it to the NLCS would be a disappointment. No, only winning it all would do; that’s the only outcome that would make sense with all this talent.
The kid with the same name of the street in Wrigley’s address, and yes, he is a kid (22 years old!), is stepping his game up. Who’s next? Maybe the better question is who’s NOT next? Nowadays, it’s more of a surprise when one of the Cubs doesn’t live up to the expectations; wow what a change that has been to witness. It’s been fun… really fun to see. I’m ready for more. Go Cubs Go!

Addison Russell is playing like a man, not a 22 year old kid. He had to have heard all of the all star grumblings, and honestly, it was warranted. His numbers were not great, but check them out now. He is having a great 2nd half, like the Cubs, and too many others to mention. Yes, he probably would not have made a difference againy the mets last year, but he will make a difference this year. Something else that will be different is how the Cubs end this year. Who’s ready??? I sure as hell know I am! GO CUBS GO!!!
