August 23, 2021: A Late Gift

posted in: Cubs | 2

Do you ever just have a feeling about a game? Before Monday night’s Cubs Rockies game, I had that feeling. I had a feeling that Kyle Hendricks was going to throw a no hitter. I just knew that he was going to pitch a great game. Because of this, I just knew the Cubs were going to win. So, I thought, I should bet on this game… I say that a lot. Sometimes I would have won, other times I would have lost. So I let this feeling, this thought roll in one ear and out the other…

I wanted to watch as much of this no-hitter as possible. When I turned on the game, it was the start of the 2nd inning, and…. the no hitter was over. The shutout was over. The game was over??? The Cubs were already losing 3-0; welp, there goes that. No need to continue to watch this game. My son had to get to bed early anyways with his first day of school on Tuesday; get up there, do some reading with him… summer is over. Take the dog out for a quick piss, and start on a project. My wife got tired of waiting for me to build a desk for her, so she bought one… that I have to put together anyways… anyways, easier than building from scratch. I had 4 versions of what I was going to do before the project got scrapped. So… since I will be busy, I might as well flip back on the Cubs. It was the 8th inning, and yay, they were on the board, still trailing 4-1.

Then something strange started happening… the Rockies relief pitcher walked the first 3 batters in the bottom of the 8th inning. Believe you me, we will be happy to take any gifts at this point. The Cubs actually capitalized on it, scoring 3x to tie the game up heading to the 9th. That was, actually, pretty fun. On to the 9th inning, where Manny Rodriguez held down the Rockies. The bottom of the 9th brought me a late birthday gift when Ortega walked it off with a 2 run bomb. Is baseball fun again?

Well, this game was. It was nice to win at Wrigley again. For God’s sake, it was what 12, 13 games… At least throw the home crowd, that is dwindling by the way, a bone every now and then. I guess my feeling would have paid off… with an improbable comeback; see, I told you!

It’s like that saying, even the sun shines on a dog’s ass every now and then… well, this was THIS dog’s day. Kyle kept us in the game, just missing another quality start; he’s definitely no dog. I believe he’s 2nd in the majors in that category. But this team of AAA players… yeah, well… that’s why we love baseball right? On any given night a AAA team can beat a MLB team, although not sure if you can categorize the Rockies like that. Whatever… a win is a win is a win, and there’s been a big time shortage of those. I’ll take it; I’ll accept this late gift. Thank you…
