August 23, 2017: Batting Practice

posted in: Cubs | 1

Who doesn’t love batting practice?  Trying to catch those foul balls before each game is fun.  It’s also fun to get in the cages and do it yourself.  One of the last times I was in there, my hands were full of blisters from hitting all those balls.  I like to switch it up too, and bat both righty and lefty.  My son recently told me he wants to bat righty too… switch hitter in the future?

If you’ve been watching the Cubs the past couple nights, you’ve seen what batting practice looks like in a real live game.  How bad is this Reds pitching staff?  Wow.  They have a pretty good lineup too.  If they had just a little pitching, they may be right in the middle of the NL Central race.  But they don’t, and I’m thankful for that.

The last couple times that Cubs had a big run output, they fell flat the following game.  That was the worry for Wednesday night’s game after scoring 13 the night before.  The Cubs responded by scoring 9 in the first 4 innings.  It has to be the Reds pitching right?

Well, yes, that’s a part of it.  Playing bad teams is part of every team’s schedule, and from here on out, the Cubs have some of them.  4 against the Braves, 3 against the Mets, and 3 against the Phillies lie ahead.  The bottom 3 teams in the NL East are a combined 61 games under.  2 against Tampa, who’s only 4 games under are the only other games against teams outside our division.  Only 3 more games vs Cincy unfortunately, but 7 each against Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Milwaukee.  This is where the division will be decided.

Besides the team you’re playing, how YOUR team is playing is important.  Every team has to beat the teams, bad or not, on their schedule.  The Cubs have been doing plenty of that after the break.  25-12 since then… 5 in a row… season high 11 games above 500… season high 3.5 game lead in the division.  Are we seeing the Cubs run on all cylinders?

Well, no Lester or Contreras lately, no Russell for a while; they’ll be back at some point.  Avila has been the gem in the Detroit acquisition so far, filling in nicely for Willson.  Bryant was hot for a while, so was Rizzo and Baez.  Schwarber has been better; he’s finally over 200.  Arrieta has been great with a 2.00 era in his last 7 starts.  Quintana has just been OK… Hendricks same.  The bullpen has been shaky…  No, we’re not there yet, but we’re getting there.

I love it when a plan comes together.  Will there be any more last minute moves by Theo?  Who will the September call ups be?  Will the Cubs pull away from everybody else?  It’s been fun seeing them win; it always is.  As we continue along in the final quarter of the regular season, it’s time to keep ramping up.  It’s time to get healthy.  It’s time to start playing our best baseball.

I think we can make games (other than against the Reds) look like batting practice.  We have the horses.  Yes, pitching & defense may be the most important, but scoring more runs than the other team equals a win every time.  Keep it up boys.  Go Cubs!

Love batting practice. Growing up as a kid, who didn’t like batting practice trying to smash balls all over the place? Then as you got older, trying to hit balls over the fence for home runs. The kids love it today just like I did back then. Baseball is always fun but seeing bombs hit makes it even better. Who doesn’t love the home run derby or long bombs during games? Yes, I know, as a former pitcher, I love pitching duels just as much, but I think most would rather see a few balls launched. The Cubs have been doing just that. Playing bad teams is not in the Cubs control. Just get those Ws! The Cubs are still missing 3 starters. Get healthy for the stretch run and who knows how far beyond that. In the meantime, keep enjoying batting practice before and during games…nothing wrong with that. I’ll keep doing the same at home! GO CUBS GO!!!
