August 21, 2017: Having Fun

posted in: Cubs | 1

Are we having fun yet Cubs fans?  Sunday was just the latest installment of fun into our lives, as the Cubs capped off the weekend sweep of the Jays with some style.

Baseball is supposed to be a fun game; it’s so much easier to see that when your team is winning.  I love seeing these guys in the majors have some fun.  I hate to think of baseball as a business; to think these guys on these teams that we love to root for only in it for the money.  You’re getting paid to play a game; how can that be a bad thing?

I would love the Cubs regardless, but seeing them have fun, through it all, just makes me like them that much more.  Baez brings that joy to the game.  I know it can’t be fun whiffing at those bad balls, for him or us, but man, he has got to be one of the most exciting players in the game.  His fielding….did you see that play on Friday?  Wow.  Then his home runs; he had another this weekend.  He doesn’t get many cheapies.  Then his base running…that was again on full display as he slid across the plate for the game winner Sunday.

It’s not only the talent, and things that he’s able to do on the baseball field, it’s the way he does it.  He’s got flair.  Some people may look at it as hot-dogging…being cocky…not respecting the game.  I look at it like, hey, that guy is having some fun out there.  I don’t like to see guys get shown up, or bad plays happen because there’s too much mustard on that hot dog; I will admit Baez walks that fine line in between the two.  Maybe it’s just because he’s on my team, but I’d like to think of it as having fun.

What’s wrong with that?  Part of the reason we love baseball so much is because it’s supposed to be fun.  It’s that game we played growing up.  More guys need to have fun with it; take the game and themselves a little less seriously.  I’m not saying winning is not important.  It is.  I just think you can play hard, have fun, and win!

How about the bullpen dancing after each home run?  I think that’s awesome.  Again, some people may poo poo on it, but so what.  Get a grip people.  Or maybe some may say, Justin Wilson needs to concentrate on his pitching not his dancing.  Ok, maybe I would say that too, but still…enjoy it boys!  The whole concept of celebrating each win during the season is a great one that Joe brought.  There are those people who take shots at him too because of this ‘fun’ stuff.  Who wouldn’t love to have him as your boss?  I know I would.

I guess it goes to whatever job you have. We’re not all lucky enough to get paid to play a game, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t have some fun with it.  Work takes up a lot of our lives; ideally we’d do something we love, but at the very least, have a little fun at work.

This Cubs season has been a struggle, but it’s been a beautiful struggle.  We’re still in first place, and like I’ve said, the best is yet to come.  Go Cubs!

Baseball if definitely more fun when winning. The last 3 years of Cubs baseball has been aWesome fun! Young guys like Baez and Willson definitely love the game and toe that line between have fun and showing the other team up. I do not think it is intentional if they do. They play with a lot of passion. Plus, they are young. Not necessarily a valid excuse but explainable. Baseball should be a fun game. You should play with passion and get excited when good things happen. Perfect example is the bullpen dancing after a home run. Is there a more enjoyable play in baseball than a home run? Why not dance for the cameras and have fun with it? It is not like they are doing it for the whole game. I love it. I might not if other teams did it when we were playing them, but that’s how it goes. So as this 3rd winning season winds down toward the finish line, here’s hoping the Cubs fly a lot more Ws on the way to their 3rd straight postseason with a chance to defend their title! GO CUBS GO!!!
