August 20, 2020: Playing Five

posted in: Cubs | 0

The Cubs and Cards finished playing five on Wednesday night. The first doubleheader was split, the Cubs took the third game, which left the final doubleheader on Wednesday. I was working from home so I was able to tune in to the first game. I didn’t tune in right away, but heard the other TV, and heard Len say something about a grand slam… and he wasn’t too excited; that was a bad sign. Then my son came running down to tell me the bad news; thankfully I was on mute on my call. Working from home is nice, but there are a whole different set of challenges.

Coming back from a first inning grand slam is another type of challenge. With Happ sending the first pitch into the bleachers to lead off the bottom of the inning, then loading the bases the next inning, or maybe it was the third, we had our chances. It didn’t happen, plus St. Louis added on; first game was in the books as a blowout loss. Certainly the 2nd game would be better.

Unfortunately had to head out to see my chiropractor late on Wednesday. Somehow after sitting on the couch with my son, wrestling, eating cereal, I got up and it bit me; as I tried to head up the stairs, forget about it. We were supposed to go bike riding, but I spent the next hour on the floor. The next 30 minutes were spent getting up to my bedroom; the next 60 after that was spent laying in bed. It was a rough day. I couldn’t wait to see him until Thursday, so I had to take a trip to the south side; my wife and son drove me to 123rd and Pulaski.

On the way back, we were listening to game 2. Man is Bote clutch. He’s had some very big ABs… I was just talking about another a couple days ago. His 2 run single iced this one, but then I heard Kimbrel was on the mound… WTF?!!? Yeah, that made me nervous; striking out the first two batters made me feel better… hitting the next guy didn’t. That brought up Wong, who with Miller and Carpenter had a pretty decent series; Kimbrel got him… striking out the side for his first save, giving the Cubs 3 out of 5 wins. Whew…

On the way back, we picked up a pizza from Vito and Nick’s; great thin crust pizza. As we continued down Pulaski, we passed somebody in Sox gear; my son was like… hey, this is a Cubs town. I had to explain that we were on the south side, and that there were a lot of Sox fans down here. We did see a Cubs flag flying as we cut down a side street, but yeah, lots of Sox fans out that way. Speaking of the Sox…

The Cubs will meet them for the first time this year when it counts. The Sox have been playing good ball; the Cubs are one of the best teams in the majors. This should be good. I don’t hate them nearly as much as the Cardinals, but for these days, these games where the Cubs and Sox go head to head, they climb pretty high up on the hate meter… do I have a Hate File for them? Don’t think so… may have to do something about that… one day… hopefully not after this weekend. Go Cubs!
