August 20, 2019: Good Cubs

Felt weird without a Cubs game on Monday night; so happy to have them back on Tuesday night. Especially happy to see them back at Wrigley; it’s the return of the Good Cubs.

41-19 coming into the game, the Cubs have the 2nd best home record in the NL behind the Dodgers. Only the Rockies and Marlins in the NL have worse road records than the Cubs. The disparity between home and away performance is well discussed and documented. This kept true on the most recent road trip; we need it to keep true on this homestand which began Tuesday night vs the Giants.

You could feel the difference almost immediately. Hamels got through the first unscathed. Castellanos and Rizzo went deep in the bottom of the inning, and we were on our way. Then Hamels gave it right back. After another Rizzo home run, Cole gave it right back again. It was 3-3 heading into the 5th. Then the Cubs started tallying some runs without the benefit of a home run. They scratched across a run in the 5th on Lucroy’s first Wrigley hit; this time Hamels held. Cubs added another in the 7th on a nice AB and sac fly by Tony Kemp. Rowan Wick did his job; I still like him. Then it was up to Kimbrel. He shut the door, not even letting that tying run to come to the plate, and the Cubs won 5-3. W!

Castellanos, Lucroy, Kemp, Wick, and Kimbrel…million to one odds any of us thought these 5 names would all contribute to a Cubs victory this year. So what were people saying about Theo and corp? Seriously. Complain about the bullpen sure, but remember we were down Kimbrel and Cishek on this last trip. That’s not to mention being down Strop for periods of time, and not having Morrow all year. Those 4 guys healthy make a difference? I think so. Point is, I’m good with Theo; truth is, I’m fine with Joe. It’s going to come down to the guys on the field; that’s who it’s on.

We could have all guessed Rizzo would have a part in this. He’ll need to do his thing, just as KB (tough game tonight), Baez (good swings tonight), and oh yeah, Contreras who’s also out. The other young supposed core guys will need to contribute. Our starters will have to avoid blow ups. Our bullpen will need to hold it together. This can be done. Even with all the road struggles front and center, this Cubs team can overcome. I believe it. Always easier saying that after a win…

But I wasn’t throwing in the towel by any means after this latest week on the road, and believe me, it was bad enough to drive you nuts…straight up nuts. Hold it together people. Sure, the Cards are hot right now, but that shit won’t last. Cubs will prevail in the central when it’s all said and done. After that is anybody’s guess, but everybody knows. If you get in, anything can happen. The hottest team in October will win it all. Cubs are not the hottest team right now; it’s not October right now. Just get there…just get there. Welcome home Cubbies. Fly that W. Go Cubs!
