In writing my blog, I try to never use the same title twice. When beginning to write this one, the first two titles I had were already taken…
The Stopper was the first one. I had used this back when Jake beat the Sox in Wrigley in the last game before the all star break to prevent the sweep. Well, he was back at it on Thursday night as the Cubs tried to rebound from a 2 game sweep at the hands of the Tigers. 6 shutout innings. 12 quality starts in a row. First MLB pitcher to 15 wins. Cy young candidate. He is our horse, our stud, and we will ride him to the promised land… that brought me to my next title.
Back in the Saddle. I had already used this back when I returned from my week long vacation out of the country. I was referencing how good it was to be back in the city that I love and catching up with everything Chicago sports related. In today’s blog, I wanted to talk about how the Cubs are back on the right track. I really do feel that way. I feel like the 2 games were a blip… and that although there will be blips no doubt, this ship is headed in the right direction, and there is no turning back. So maybe we freeze up and start choking away our wild card lead in September… when things really heat up? A trip to the West Coast including LA and SF starting next Tuesday…maybe that’s when we start to fall? Possibly, but… I really don’t think so. I really think this Cubs team is going to be in the battle until the end… until that one game playoff series. To think, a great 162 game season will boil down to 1 game… let’s just get there.

So I used the Stopper, and I used Back in the Saddle, so next logical thing… the way my brain works, is Giddy Up! We’re back in the saddle riding our horse… so let’s go. Another one of our horses contributed last night. Anthony Rizzo hit a 3 run bomb. How good has he been? Good enough for MVP consideration? I remember first hearing this earlier in the year, and I thought, yeah right… but then I went on to make the case that he is legitimate contender. Another stat I heard this morning… .331 vs left handed pitching. Rizzo is a left handed batter remember… That’s damn impressive, considering he hit about a buck fifty vs lefties the first couple years of his career. Somebody that worked at his craft, and got better… how can you not like and respect that? In amongst all the great young players the Cubs have, Rizzo is the guy that sticks out. He is the leader.
So, giddy up Jake… giddy up Anthony… giddy up Cubs. 3 more against the Bravos, and 1 make up home game against the Tribe… No reason why we can’t take all 4 of those, and take a 5 game winning streak to the west coast. Hi Ho Silver!!!!!

Jake Arrieta has been awesome this year! Another solid outing yesterday that helped get the Cubs back on track. Yet, he was still not satisfied…100+ pitches thru 6 innings. With the lead the Cubs had, no need to have Jake throw extra pitches…Maddon is thinking down the line and why shouldn’t he be? If the Cubs make that 1 game playoff, Arrieta will be the guy, and then maybe the Cubs will need 8 or 9 innings with 130 pitches. Keep some in the holster Jake! Keep making smart decisions Maddon! Keep winning games Cubs! Finish this homestand strong and get ready to circle the wagons out west…would love to meet the dodgers in the playoffs and exact some revenge! Round 2 at dodger stadium anyone???
