August 2, 2022: Soto Go

The 2022 MLB trade deadline came and went without any major heartbreak for us Cubs fans. I guess the only thing that made me angry was that the Cubs made no attempt to go after Juan Soto. I was happy about Willson staying though. I guess we’ll take it; couldn’t possibly be worse than last year.

One of the best players in baseball at the age of 23 turned down a huge contract which forced the team he was playing with to trade him in order to get something back for him. How was that return? It doesn’t matter. Why? Because the team that got Juan Soto, is the team that won that trade. That team was the San Diego Padres; I’m glad it wasn’t the Cardinals… I don’t really mind the current day Padres; of course there is the whole 1984 thing that I have filed away in the Hate Files. I’m just pissed the Cubs weren’t even mentioned in the pursuit of Soto. Why not? Supposedly we have one of the best minor league systems now, right? Racking up all those prospects while trading away legit major league talent; sounds like a winning strategy to me… But yeah, that minor league talent could have came in pretty handy here. It should have been all hands on deck, meaning, everybody should have been available to acquire a guy like Juan Soto. It doesn’t matter if the Cubs weren’t going to compete this year, next year, or the next year, or… OK, you get it. When you add that piece to your squad, everything changes. You have to be able to go with the flow, and not stick with your plan… like that plan to not sign any of your players to long term deals… I don’t get it.

I was honestly surprised that Willson didn’t get moved; happily surprised that is. Maybe HE could be the first guy the Cubs lock up? Well, even though he wasn’t moved at the deadline, I think the Cubs will get some sort of a draft pick if he signs elsewhere in the offseason; that return sounds about right for those guys wheeling and dealing for our Cubbies. Novel concept boys: sign him. He isn’t 23 years old, but he’s still got a good 5 years left, no? I’m glad he’s still in a Cubs uniform; I just don’t have a lot of faith that he will be in the 2023 season. One way or another, they will F us on this thing…

Ian Happ? Who cares honestly. I know… he’s had a good year, an “all-star” year… I would have liked to sell high on Ian, but maybe that’s just me. We did get some guys for Robertson and Givens; not sure why we dumped a rookie reliever in Effross, but whatever… not heartbroken by any means. Yes, this deadline will not go down in infamy for Cubs fans. Instead, it will be remembered for one of the biggest trades in MLB history. Juan Soto has a new team; too bad it couldn’t have been our team… He would have looked good hitting behind Willson in our lineup…
