OK, let’s change topics for a day… I need to… so much more to say… we’ll have plenty of time to get to all of that. But today, let’s talk about the Bulls. The events that have been taking place with them has been making me feel better.
First, the draft pick. Yes, we did not have a first round pick. It was traded to Orlando as part of the Vucevic deal. Thus, the first pick the Bulls would have would be #38 overall in the 2nd round. You have to go back to 1990 when the Bulls selected someone worth something in the 2nd round. That year, the selection was Toni Kukoc. Worth mentioning here I think, is our 2nd round pick from last year Marko Simonovic, who will be playing for us next year? Will he be the second coming of Toni Kukoc? If only we can be that lucky… But for this year’s 2nd round pick, we didn’t have to look on another continent; hell, we didn’t have to even look in another state, or city for that matter. Yep, we’re bringing another homegrown Chicago talent to the Bulls. Ayo Dosunmo from Chicago, from the University of Illinois, thankfully fell to us; I wonder why…
I love the pick. Of course, there is some bias here, wanting a Chicago guy to do well, recently cheering him on in the NCAA tournament this past year. Yes, that tourney appearance for the #1 rated Fighting Illini didn’t go as planned. Yes, the NCAA committee gave Illinois the ridiculous 2nd round matchup with Loyola that turned out to be their downfall, but still… When you’re #1, you win, period. This is what they did throughout the season though, in the very tough Big 10, and Ayo was right in the middle of that. Maybe he fell because folks don’t think his ceiling will be that high, but I see a guy that can do a little bit of everything, kind of like a Swiss Army Knife. He can play D, he can move the ball around, he can get buckets if need be. I love the pick. At that point in the draft, anything we can from him is a bonus; I think we’ll get a great player coming off our bench THIS year.
Next up, the Lonzo Ball trade. I…. like it. I wasn’t a fan of him, or any of the Balls for that matter, because of their outspoken father. Among the crazy things he said was that he could beat MJ one on one… enough said. Anyways, haven’t heard much from him lately, thankfully, but there is no denying that his sons can play ball. I haven’t followed Lonzo that closely to be honest, but I do know, the Bulls need a true starting point guard. Nothing against Coby White. If you recall, I love that guy, and decided that he is a keeper, regardless if he is a true point guard, regardless if he is starting or not. The guy can fill it up, and he plays hard. Another great piece of the bench this year? Our depth is shaping up btw…

We said goodbye to Temple and Sato and a 2nd round pick, and paid Lonzo a whole lot of dough, but… I think it will be worth it. Nowadays, bench warmers get paid millions of dollars, so, the 4 year 85 million isn’t the end of the world, right? Well, as long as he does what AKME wants him to do.
And then there was the Caruso signing; that came out of nowhere. While folks were pining to bring back DRose again, AKME went out and grabbed another decent player in Alex Caruso. Here’s a guy I couldn’t stand for the sole reason he played on the Lakers with Lebron. Again, not sure how good this guy is; I don’t watch the NBA much outside the Bulls. But, from the sound of things, he sounds like another good defender, same as part of Ball’s skills… same as part of Ayo’s skills. So we’re bulking up the defense? I’m not mad at that. But it’s not just that… the pieces seem to be lining up nicely for our Bulls, and that makes me really excited.
Of course, we’re not done yet, and there still will be many questions heading into next season, but… so far so good… no bull-sitting… AKME has proven himself again to me. From the questionable first round pick last year, to the Vucevic trade that hasn’t necessarily panned out yet, to the Ayo pick, and the acquisition of Ball and Caruso, I love the action. They’re not sitting around; they’re making things happen. Are they the right things? Can’t wait to find out… Go Bulls!
