Taking a quick break from the Cubs to bring you a Sox story.
It was my second Sox game, well, actualy 3rd Sox game of the year. It was the second visit to the Cell. Ever since I found Ricobene’s had a free shuttle to the game, that became step one. The reason I was even at another Sox game tied in to my first visit, which was over the summer with my dad, bro, and bro in law. The Sox sent a survey to me. If I took it, I got free tickets. I can almost never say no to free. So I took the survey, and got the code. I selected 2 free tickets, and bought one more; 3 for 1, and we were locked and loaded.
My son hadn’t been to the Cell yet this year; yes, I do like to take him there too. It’s where I spent a number of games growing up. It wasn’t the Cell back then, but it was on 35th. I liked Comiskey Park. Growing up, I liked the Sox too. My favorites were Harold Baines, Ron Kittle, Richard Dotson… that era. There were many fun nights spent at the old ball park.
Back to Friday night, and we parked in the Ricobene’s lot. As we crossed 26th, we saw a sign posted on the door: Shuttle not running tonight. Well, there goes that. Still, I was at one of my favorite restaurants in the city about to order my favorite sandwich. We’d figure it out. Pay for parking? Uber? Nah… it was a nice night, so yeah, we walked it.

Straight down Princeton all the way to the park. We got there just as the game was starting. Our seats were up in the nose bleed area; what did I expect for free? The park did fill in a bit, with the stress on a “bit”. As I looked around, I thought this park can’t hold a candle to Wrigley, and I was right… until we found the Fundamentals section in left field.
My 4 year old was asking to walk around the minute we sat down. After walking a mile, I was ready to sit for 9 innings. I held him off until the 3rd inning, and off we went. The Fundamentals section of the ballpark is the absolute best part. They have everything for a kid to do. He fielded a few ground balls; as he walked up, he told the instructor that “he’s got this”. He fielded both successfully, and made the throw to first. Next up, was a race. He lined up and raced a Scott Podsednik cutout down to first base. Then came the batting cage; he’s not quite ready for that one… a bunch of swings and misses and he took his helmet off in disgust. No worries though, went to throw some balls next. He hit the catcher with 2 out of 3 throws; he’s back! The best came last as he went to bat again. This time, it was a ball hanging from a rope, kind of like on a tee. He put his Sox helmet on, lined up his toes to the white line in the batter’s box, put his left elbow up, and socked the crap out of the ball. He did this over and over, visiting 3 stations in total; my wife got some good snaps of these. The night was a success.
It wasn’t so much for the home team though. 9-0 was the final; the only reason we stood until the end was the other perk of this ballpark: the fireworks of course. A firework show topped off the night, and a mile walk back down Wells this time. The Sox lost, but who cared.
We had a great time at the ball park. It reminded me of the great times I had at Comiskey growing up. It was sort of like walking back down memory lane. Yeah, they didn’t have fundamentals back then, and it was called Comiskey, but it was a great time with my family. I hope my son can say the same when he gets older… and that’s my Sox story.

Baines, cruz, law…those 80s sox! Did enjoy comiskey, just like tiger stadium. That upper deck outfield is pretty damn cool. And who can forget big flys onto the roof!
The cell is nice and all but nothing like Wrigley. That fundamentals area sounds pretty cool, though, for the kids. Maybe the sox should get back to the fundamentals of winning? Fire ventura and see what happens.
