August 18, 2017: Friday Afternoon

posted in: Cubs | 1

My buddy in LA used to be amazed by it.  Watching all the Cubs home day games on WGN over the years, not believing that all those people were at the Cubs game.  Doesn’t anybody in Chicago work?  I guess I felt that way in Paris, seeing all those people sitting in outdoor cafes; what does everybody do here?  Whether taking a day off of work, not working any more period, taking clients to a game, or visiting from another city on vacation, it is true; close to 40k people fill Wrigley for every day game.

Friday afternoon was no different.  It was the Blue Jays in town.  Any visiting team has fans who make visiting Wrigley a priority over other stadiums, especially teams who rarely visit.  So yes, Toronto fans piled in, and blended in with all that Cubbie blue in the park.  This could have been last year’s World Series matchup.  It probably would have been cheaper to go to a game in Toronto than Cleveland, although I hear they do love their Blue Jays.

Yes, this game didn’t have quite that much on the line, but Wrigley was still filled.  The Cubs have the slimmest division lead in baseball.  Every game is important.  Summer is in the home stretch.  If you haven’t been out yet, get out soon.  Beautiful days like this Friday afternoon won’t be around much longer.  I love day games.

I love night games too, but I don’t think anything else in sports can top an afternoon at Wrigley; I don’t think that will ever get old.  During the week, if you’re there, half the fun of it is that yes, you’re not at work like the other X million of people in the city and suburbs that day.  Yes, we do have to work in Chicago.  And yes, instead of sitting at your desk checking emails or half listening on a conference call, you are in a sun soaked place where people have been watching ball games for over 100 years.  Same park.  Same great place to watch a ball game.

On this Friday afternoon, it was the return of some ex-Cubs.  Yes, multiple players came back on this day.  I know you remember Darwin Barney.  I loved that combo of him and Riot up the middle.  Fontenot was cool too…but I liked Darwin’s style a bit more.  He was a gamer.  Didn’t catch if the Cubs did a little video montage of him.  Ok, I guess every ex-player doesn’t get one.

The other one should have.  Miggy will forever go down in Cubs lore.  Yes, it wasn’t all boos at Wrigley this afternoon, but there was enough.  If I was there, like I almost was, I would have given him a standing O that first AB.   The grand slam against the Dodgers, the insurance run against the Indians; tell me you remember that more than the post parade rant and the Jake is slow to the plate talk.  What he did, what anybody did during that postseason run, trumps everything else.  I still love Dex regardless of that ugly uniform he currently wears.  And I still love Miggy, regardless of what went down.  Dummies.

But the end result was that song playing again, and all those people not working, but singing instead.  I hope Friday afternoons never change at Wrigley.  I love to see that W raised, but just being there, a day game on any day, is what it’s all about.  It’s our sitting in a cafe in Paris.  It’s our getaway from the normal world.  Yes, for those lucky 40k, it’s a day to always cherish.  Get there if you’ve never been!  Go Cubs!

Any afternoon at Wrigley is better than just about anything, but certainly better than working. Day baseball under the sun cant be beat. The bluejays came to town having a disaapointing season. Barney was back. Miggy was back. Barney played on the Cubs during some rough years. He didnt get to experience the joy of last year. Maybe Miggy filled him in. Miggy did experience it and played a big part in it. Regardless of how he left, he will always be a Cubs champ. Just enjoy playing a few more years Miggy and try to keep that trap closed. It’s a beautiful day for baseball at Wrigley…always is, day or night. The baseball cathedral is aWesome…soak it in! GO CUBS GO!!!
