Just give us the preseason title already… The Bears looked good (again) against the Bengals on Saturday at Soldier Field. It gave the faithful their first look at Caleb, and I can’t lie… what I saw certainly didn’t damper my excitement for the season. In fact, it’s only fueling it… keep telling myself to pump the brakes. It’s hard.
We’ve been in a rut. 8 years since the Cubs won it all; 9 years since the Blackhawks… much longer than that for the Bulls (26 years) and of course DA Bears (38 years). It’s about time Chicago goes on a roll again, and the one team that would get us rolling the most, is our Bears. Is this the opening up of a window as they say? I think so. Did the Bears finally get it right drafting a QB? That would be nice… I think I’ve asked myself that question 100x. No answer yet, but from the first impressions in preseason (how much stock can you really put in that?), I think we finally did get it right. The pass to Odunze… escaping pressure, rolling out of the pocket to his left, throwing a rope, and putting it in a bucket 40 yards downfield… like I’ve said before, I’ve only seen other teams’ QBs do that sort of stuff. The next pass to Odunze was just as impressive. He escaped pressure again (not sure if I like this common theme), rolled to his right, and as he ran out of bounds, threw a dart to Rome in the corner of the end zone; the only problem was that he was standing out of bounds. This setup Caleb’s first TD in a Bears uniform. Again, escaping the pocket, rolling out, he ran it in from 10 yards out; TD! We’ve seen recent Bears QBs roll out and score, so not like it was something we’ve never seen before, but it was still nice to see. Caleb is a rookie, and there will be a learning curve, but from the looks of it, he’s going to be A-OK. This is great news for us Bears fans.
Of course, as Bears fans, we always want to lean on our defense, and from the looks of it thus far, and again, it’s only preseason, but the boys look ready to pickup where they left off last year; this is a VERY good thing. Bringing in a rookie QB that’s not expected to do it all, giving him weapons, fielding a defense near the top of the NFL… it feels like a formula for success. I know we haven’t always given our QBs the best chance to succeed, but this time I think we have; this is more great news. Last up on the preseason slate is the Chiefs; Super Bowl preview? Haha…
The real games start in about 3 weeks… that long?!?! Yeah, if the Bears put on another good show against the Chiefs, the hype will only continue to build. I think I called for a 10-7 season; I’d be very happy with that, especially if a playoff game comes along with it. The time is now; the window is opening… hopefully will stay open for a long time. Our time is about to begin. Tick, tock… Bear Down!
