August 17, 2023: Whoa Nellie

I don’t know why this Keith Jackson phrase came to me after Christopher Morel hit the game winning home run to beat the White Sox on Wednesday night at Wrigley, but it did. I think it appropriately matches this unbelievable moment. More important than anything, the Cubs really needed this W; for it to happen against the Sox in a game where they entered the 9th inning trailing by 2 runs, well… touche? We gave the White Sox their highlight of the year on Tuesday night with Luis Robert’s moon shot that turned out to be the game winning hit, and now, we taketh away. This is more like it. I just hope there weren’t too many fights leaving out of Wrigley. Lots of happy Cubs fans… not so much for our brethren from the South.

It was looking like another dud of a performance by our Cubbies. It was looking like another cross town matchup split right down the middle when the Sox entered the bottom of the 9th three outs from a W. Cody double, Dansby walk, and Morel BOOM; very nice! But I’d like to recognize someone else who played a big role in this victory: Michael Fullmer. He started the year off pretty well, then went into the tank; as of late, he’s been pitching a lot better. He entered this game in the top of the 8th inning with the bases loaded, nobody out, with the heart of the Sox lineup coming up. Robert K. Moncada backwards K. Vaughn K. This was the moment that kept the Sox within striking distance; the Cubs still hadn’t scratched the scoreboard down 3-0. It was then when another guy made his presence known. Remember Nick Madrigal White Sox fans? If you didn’t then, you do now. He deposited one in the left field basket a la Javy Baez in Game 1 of the 2016 NLDS to give the Cubs their first run in the bottom of the 8th. Bravo!

The Sox had played, pitched well enough to win another game in the Cathedral, but fate had other ideas. Would this 2 game sweep to the Sox signify the beginning of the end to the Cubs hot streak and playoff hopes? Maybe that’s a bit too much, but man… losing two games to the 4th worst team in the majors… that would have hurt. Coming back and winning in this manner??? Well, if you still weren’t feeling the mojo of this team up to this point, then I present the latest, greatest case. Christopher Morel walk off 3 run dong. Absolutely love his reaction as he rounded the bases; he was just like us… going crazy for this huge moment. While my son jumped into my arms, Morel started taking off his shirts… love it! I thought Taylor was going to tackle him as he came off the field… haha. Whoa nellie… what a moment.

Now we get to take a breath with an off-day on Thursday before welcoming another team we should beat into Wrigley this weekend in the Kansas City Royals, although they have been playing some really good ball lately; can’t overlook anybody. We can say good bye to our cross town bros; I hope all the Sox fans in the house stood to the very end of this one… ouch. And for us, hell yeah!!! Fly that W! Go Cubs!!!
