After winning the first game in Cincy, the Cubs lost 6 out of the next 7 on this current road trip. Each loss being uglier and uglier; each loss hurting a little more. Each loss pushing us further on the edge, not understanding why a team so good at home can be so bad on the road. Then Saturday happened… a road win. I forgot what it felt like to win a game.
It feels damn good, let me tell you. That W flag that I have flying in front of my house actually stood for a Cubs win on this day. No, I don’t take it down if they lose, it stays up 24/7… although I felt like taking it down this week after a couple of those Ls. No, I wouldn’t burn it or anything… just getting pissed. At the very least, try to mix up the mojo; I’ve been known to do shit like that. Nah, we’re just riding this out, and Saturday, it finally happened.
It’s the Pirates for God’s sake. They’ve been on a steady decline after the break. And yet, they still walked off on us on Friday night. I was putting my son to bed, and pulled up the game on MLB.com. We watched in pain as the Cubs blew that game in the 9th… 3 walks?!? I was OK with that intentional walk to Bell; don’t let their best guy beat us. I’m totally onboard with that one, but then Kintzler can’t get the ball over the plate? Maybe Joe shouldn’t have put him in fresh off the DL in a high leverage spot… I don’t know. Yeah, another kick in the nuts. But Saturday, yeah, Saturday, revenge… haha.

Bases loaded nobody out? Lester beared down… big time. We’ve seen him do this at times. He gets in a situation, and then he just makes some great fricking pitches to get out. He was really zoned in, keeping the score at zeroes, in what looked like a game that not a lot of runs would be scored. That kid from the Pirates was mowing us down. Then KB went deep; that was refreshing. The Cubs had a lead, but we’re used to those; we’re not used to holding them. We did, and the Cubs won a road game.
It shouldn’t feel this good to win a road game; it should be something we do on a somewhat normal basis. But man… this win feels like that oasis in the desert. Just wandering and wandering in the desert, and there it is… Now we can actually win a series on the road for the first time since May 19th when we beat the Nationals. We’ve only won 4 road series all year; that’s just nuts. One more game and then we’ll be home… Go Cubs!
