August 17, 2014: Worst Games I Ever Attended- Part 2

posted in: Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox | 0

I don’t have as many candidates for this list as I did for the best games.  That’s a good thing.  The only honorable mention I could think of was when I saw the Bears open their season in 2007 in San Diego.  The traffic was so bad getting there, we had to park like a mile away, and we missed the start of the game.  The game was a loss marked by a season ending injury to Mike Brown; I think Tommie Harris got hurt too.  Other than that game, it’s all out on the table in this list.  We don’t want to add to this list any time soon.

5.  April 29, 2014:  Washington Wizards at Chicago Bulls

The most recent addition to this list was about 4 months ago.  This game marked the last game of the season for the Bulls, as they were eliminated from the playoffs.  Actually, all but one of the top five are of this season ending variety.  Never a good game to be in attendance for, when your teams go home for the season, it’s always upsetting.  For this to happen to this bunch of warriors on our home court was especially sad; although, it was kind of a relief too.  It didn’t help that we got in a fender bender following the game; welcome to the top 5.

4.  October 31, 1994:  Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears

I had no idea I would be in attendance on this typhoon of a night.  It was a horrible night for Halloween, and pretty much anything needed to be done outside on this Monday night; that’s how I fell into these tickets.  Working as a bus boy, a couple came in with tickets to this Monday night tilt.  As the weather continued to be bad, they decided they weren’t going to the game and offered up the tickets.  The waitress asked me, and I didn’t hesitate for a second.  I called up my friend, and we were there.  What a great surprise, especially with Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus getting their numbers retired at halftime.  This should have been on the best list, except Brett Favre and Edgar Bennett had other plans.  They trounced us, and losing to your most hated rival is the worst.  This marked the only time I’ve seen the Bears play them in person; I need some redemption here.

3.  May 27, 2011:  Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls

Another Game 5 at home, this time in the Eastern Conference Finals.  Only days after one of the best games of all time, when the Bulls opened up this series with a trouncing of the Heat, the Bulls were eliminated.  Figuring we had to pay our dues like any other championship team, all I wanted was another shot against this team in the playoffs.  Little did I know this would never happen with the Bulls at 100%, as the Rose injury parade began in the first game of the playoffs the following year.  I’m glad I sold those tickets, or else we’d have another game on this list.

2.  January 19, 2002:  Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears

My first Bears playoff game.  My future wife actually won these tickets for us in a random drawing.  I was soooooo happy; I couldn’t wait to go.  Starting the festivities at Miller’s Pub, walking over to Soldier Field yapping with some Eagles’ fans, seeing the Storm Troopers outside tailgating; this was playoff football.  I remember cheering for Ahmad Merritt, fellow St Rita grad, when he scored on an end around early in the contest.  That’s was about all we had to cheer about.  Walking out of the game, I felt horrible.  It doesn’t help when you’re half in the bag, but a season ending loss like this is like a kick to the groin.  A lot of hanging heads leaving Soldier Field that night; there was only one night that I felt worse.

1.  October 4, 2008:  Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers

Mentioned in my Dodger Hate File, this game tops them all.  The Cubs finished with the best record in baseball this year.  When the matchup was set to play LA, I was so excited.  Living in LA at the time, I bought tickets to both Games 3 and 4, as my brother arranged for his flight out to the West Coast.  Well, we didn’t need those Game 4 tickets.  A three game sweep was capped off by this gem on a beautiful LA night.  How could this happen?  How did we choke this bad?  This ranks among the worst games EVER, regardless if I was in attendance.  But being there for this… seeing another Cubs season end in the playoffs… seeing the best team in baseball after 162 games get swept out by these losers… seeing the 100+ year drought continue was sickening.

It doesn’t surprise me that the Cubs top this list.  They always break my heart.  The last 3 years have been rough, but at least we weren’t expecting them to win.  It was easier to swallow, knowing we were tanking, even though each loss still bothers me.  At least the stakes weren’t high, while the rebuilding mode began.  Next year for the Cubs excites me, but scares me too.  As the Cubs get better, and get back in playoff contention, the potential for serious heartbreak returns.  The door to my heart, and potentially my old wounds, will open.  The type of heartbreak that they deliver is first class.  We are owed one.

After reviewing all the best and worst games that I attended, I feel lucky to be able to attend so many games.  I enjoy watching my teams play each and every game, and try to watch as much as possible.  Going to a game is the best experience, and one of the best ways to spend my money; you never know what will happen.  Unfortunately, I’m sure I will add to this worst list, but I also believe I will add to the best list.  I want to top the best list.  I’ll have to save up for that game, but it will be worth every penny.  Thanks for reading these lists, and sharing my joy & pain.  We’ve only just begun…
