When the rankings for top centers in the NHL came out, the big news around here was the absence of someone. I know he hasn’t been at his best, but for him to fall out of the top 20? I respectfully disagree with that assessment. Maybe not top 10, but Jonathan Toews is definitely a top 20 center. I’d still go to war with him any game any time.
Maybe this ranking is more reflective of the team’s decline. Getting knocked out of the first round two years in a row, followed by missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade, is definitely representative of a decline, especially considering where we were. Before that, 3 Cups in 6 years…a pretty good run by any standard. At the heart of that run, was Jonathan Toews; at the heart of this decline, is Jonathan Toews. He is our heart.
Yes, the core consists of more. Kane, Keith, Seabs are still here. Hossa, Sharp, Hammer are not. Crow? That’s another blog. Only Kane has really not see a large decline in his production. Toews has declined.
Over the past 3 years, he has averaged 56 points per year. The last 2 full seasons before that, he averaged 67 points per year. So yeah, his numbers are down. The eye test may be even worse, as everybody else in the league seems to be getting quicker. Or maybe he’s just getting older.

Duh, yeah he’s getting older. He turned 30 this past season; what I wouldn’t give to be that old. He’s also dealt with a series of injuries; no excuses, just facts. He’s also dealt with changing line mates. The first line has been an adventure. While Kane’s line is more locked in, Toews has to play with a variety of guys; losing Hossa didn’t help. I liked the acquisition of Saad; I thought he’d help everybody, including Toews. I still do. I don’t think last year is representative of how that will turn out. I think that first line will be a lot stronger this year. And if not, maybe putting Toews and Kane on the same line is the move Q will have to make. Although that will hurt our depth, Toews and Kane on the same line has been pretty successful in the past.
It sucks to see this latest golden era of Hawks hockey seemingly coming to an end. I don’t want to believe it. I think Toews and the Hawks will be back in the playoffs this year; that’s where you can really rank guys. Heart is immeasurable, as is experience. If you factor that in to the rankings, Toews climbs the ladder. If missing the playoffs wasn’t enough motivation, maybe posting these ranking in your locker would be. Captain declining? It’s kind of like this. As Toews goes so do the Hawks. That’s how it works with a leader. Your individual performance is tied directly to the team’s. I’m sure Jonny wouldn’t want it any other way.
A champion on the world stage in under 17, juniors, worlds, and the Olympics… a 3 time Stanley Cup champion… voted one of the top 100 NHL players of all time… yeah, about these rankings this year… Lead us back to the promised land El Capitan… Go Hawks!

Captain Serious declining? Yes, I’ll give you that. Not a top 20 center…please. The guy is champion through and through. He has been in all the battles. He has all the experience. He has never had the most talent or most speed, but it was his heart and determination that carried him through. He has not been healthy. I expect a rebound year for Toews and the Hawks this year. He is still the leader. I would still choose him at center in any big game. Maybe he and the Hawks need some extra motivation this year. If so, here is a piece to use. Let’s go Captain! LET’S GO HAWKS!!!
