August 16, 2014: Worst Games I Ever Attended- Part 1

posted in: Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox | 0

We’ve had the best, now let’s do the worst.  I should have done it the other way around, so we could end this trip down memory lane on a high note.

These are the Top 10 worst games that I ever attended.  The thing about these games is that they all could have been on the best list.  You never think when you’re attending a game that it will make your all-time worst list.  The biggest reason to make this list was a loss:  a BIG loss, a hurtful loss.  There is only one win on this list, which made the list for another reason.  There are no Blackhawk games on this list, and only one Sox game; let’s start there.

10.  April 18, 1991:  Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox

The first game at the Cell.  I was in attendance because my high school had a walkathon, that led us through the South Side, from 77th & Western all the way to Bridgeport.  That was the cool part.  It was also cool to be at that first game; the result not so much.  The 16-0 drubbing the Sox sustained that day was one of their worst losses of all time.  Looking back at the starting lineup from that day, there was a young slugger named Sammy Sosa starting for the Sox.  I didn’t remember that.  I do remember the butt kicking that ruined all the festivities surrounding that inaugural game.  Ugly, ugly loss.

9.  December 12, 2010:  New England Patriots at Chicago Bears

So much for Bear weather…  With the field covered in snow and freezing temperatures for this 3:15 start, we were bundled up and ready for a great game.  It didn’t take long before the Pats opened up that can…  We were sitting in the end zone and I remember early in the 1st quarter a Brady pass getting deflected right in front of us, and one of our defenders dropping it in the end zone.  That was as close as we got.  A 36-7 drubbing ensued.  My wife wanted to leave at halftime.  We stood until late 4th quarter until we trudged back to the car with frostbitten fingers and toes.  Not the way I saw this game turning out.

8.  December 21, 2007:  Sacramento Kings at Chicago Bulls

I scored last minute tickets for this game… GREAT tickets, a few rows behind the Bulls bench.  The game was a blowout, with the Bulls building up a 35 point 2nd half lead.  Yeah, they blew it.  Sitting there watching the Kings comeback in disbelief, I knew from that point Vinny Del Negro would not last as coach.  It wasn’t all his fault, but a 35 point lead!?!  Merry Christmas…

7.  August 9, 2009:  Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs

We took my mother to her first Cubs game in forever.  We had good seats sitting along the left field line by the Cubs bullpen.  It was a beautiful day, and Mark Prior was on the mound.  It couldn’t get much better than this.  The Cubs lead early until the Reds tied it up off Prior in the 7th.  Then the bullpen came in.  Then they melted down.  Then I melted down.  Will Ohman, Scott Williamson, and Ryan Dempster proceeded to give up 4 runs in the last 2 innings.  I was furious that they lost this game for my Mom.  I began yelling at the bullpen, then Kerry Wood got on the phone.  As I saw security coming, I got up and left.  Why do I always get so emotional, especially when it comes to the Cubs?

6.  June 5, 2008:  Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers

Speaking of emotional…  This was the only win on the list, but I did not get to see it.  Let me explain.  Again, a great start to the night enjoying some Modelos and tequila at our Mexican restaurant down the street from Dodger Stadium.  Getting to our seats, I put my Fukudome headband on, and began loudly cheering my team.  There was someone who wasn’t too fond of that sitting a couple rows behind us.  We exchanged some words; no big deal.  This happens when you go on the road to watch your team; I don’t mind getting into it… to a point.  I’m not there to fight anyone, but this guy wouldn’t stop.  Inning after inning passed, and while I had settled in to try and enjoy the game, this guy kept blabbing.  I finally lost it, and used my Dodger dog to motion how I felt about him.  Security must of caught wind, and they soon were escorting me out; not listening to my side of the story.  I was furious.  After getting escorted out of the stadium, I found myself drunkily wandering the guts of Dodger Stadium trying to get back in; I did!  As I pushed through a set of doors, I found myself on the other side of the stadium in a section down the left field line.  Security greeted me, and I was thrown in the stadium holding cell.  They released me after the game, and I was suspended from Dodger Stadium for a year.  Problem was, I had tickets for the next game.  I shaved my face, put on some sunglasses, and returned the next night; with my future wife and a lot calmer.  Getting tossed in the stadium jail qualifies this one, even though up until then my friend and I had a blast; even though the Cubs came back and won.

So there’s the tip of the iceberg.  You get the drift?  Next, are numbers 1 through 5; 4 out of 5 of those losses are of the playoff variety.  The most painful losses that I have experienced in person.  I get upset thinking about it.
