August 15, 2015: The Rivalry

Thinking about it, one of the best rivalries for our teams is the one that is between them.  The Cubs Sox rivalry is probably more heated than any other one right now, and probably more even too.

This series gets the blood pumping bottom line.  Yeah, it sucks when both teams suck, but when they’re decent… or when one of them is good, the series is awesome.  It’s the closest thing to a playoff game.  The dislike for the other team is in the air.  I guess that’s why I don’t like the Sox; this very series helps promote my dislike for them.  Anyone who stands in the way of my love for the Cubs gets the hate… and for these games, it’s none other than another Chicago team that gets my ire.  There have been some great moments over the years in this series… yesterday will rank somewhere on the list.

The Pedro Strop fist pump.  That is what I saw last night in the highlights, post game shows, radio talk shows this morning.  That was the talk.. trying to fire up both fan bases.  Was it a little much?  Sure, but I loved it.  That’s the way I felt.  That’s what I was doing.  Show a little emotion for God’s sake.  This series does that to you.  The fact that the Cubs are doing really well right now, and the Sox, well, they’re not horrible… has this series amped up.  It’s always a close call.

In my lifetime, neither team has been that much better than the other for an extended amount of time.  They’ve both had their good years, and both had their bad years.  The Sox of course had the best year of all in 2005, but that was it.  1-0 on the World Series titles in my lifetime… really close.  3-2 in the World Series all time…. still really close.  Unfortunately, both of these teams have lost much more than they have won.  The Sox got that monkey off their back 10 years ago… the Cubs are still carrying one…. the biggest one in professional sports.  I’m ready to dump him.

What other rivalry gets you that pumped up?  Bears Packers comes to my mind… I hate the cheese, but they’ve owned us… not much of a rivalry.  Cubs Cards… ditto.  Blackhawks anybody… not enough feeling.  Bulls Cavs… definitely, but yeah, we’re on the wrong side of that one too.  So… it’s Cubs Sox.  That’s what gets the blood pumping more than anything else.  Those games are the closest, most competitive.  Those 2 franchises are very similar.  It’s the Cubs Sox rivalry that takes the cake.

That’s why Jeff Samardzija is not liked now.  The fact that he went cross town, and is so proud to play for them.  Screw him.  I look up and down that lineup, that entire team, and I can barely find a guy to like.  Abreu.. he’s good.  Sale… one of the best, but really, I can’t say I like any of the current Sox that much.  If so, I definitely won’t admit it this weekend.  And yeah, in 2005, I didn’t watch any of that world series.  The hate was flowing… jealousy…  that this other baseball team in Chicago was getting their glory… while mine still waited.  A piece of me was happy, for those Sox fans in my life, and the city of Chicago… that damn civic pride, but other than that, not one ounce of personal happiness.  There will be immeasurable happiness when my team wins.  So regardless of how good we are right now, and how badly I want to beat the Sox, and how much I love it when it happens, the ultimate goal still sits out there.  That’s what it boils down to… that’s what we patiently wait for.

But until then, I hope we smash the Sox to smithereens this weekend.  Jake on the mound tonight… oh yeah.  Sale tomorrow… I hope we knock him around the yard.  Sweep hopefully.  Put the nail in their coffin, and focus on what’s ahead.  This rivalry gets all my attention… party tonight and gathering tomorrow… phone checking for sure.  TV’s will hopefully be in play.  I don’t want to miss a minute of this.  The rivalry is good again, and with the Cubs winning, it doesn’t get better.  Oh yeah, it does… and hopefully will soon.  Go Cubs!
