August 14, 2017: Monday Fun Day

posted in: Cubs | 1

Let’s be honest.  Mondays suck.  If it is your first day back at work from the weekend, like it is for a bunch of us, it is not a fun day.  Like they say in Office Space, it sounds like I have a case of the Mondays.

But the Cubs cured that on this Monday.  Whether it’s a problem at home or at work, whether it’s a lack of sleep or a headache, whether it’s sucky national or local news, these Monday blues were erased for a few hours by our first place Cubbies.  They put an absolute beatdown on the last place Reds.

That’s the way it should be when a first place team meets a last place team.  That’s the way it should be when you return home to 40,000 faithful in the best place ever to play a baseball game.  That’s the way it should be from here on out.  The Cubs have the 2nd easiest schedule remaining, including being tied for the most home games.  If the Cubs don’t win the division, there will be no excuses.

Yes, there will be excuses; we’re always looking for something to blame when things don’t go our way.  We’ll be lining up trying to figure out what went wrong.  But at the end of the day, whatever has happened up to this point doesn’t matter.  The Cubs are in first place; we get to write how this chapter ends.

I thought maybe we’d remember when the Cubs had 1st and 3rd nobody out and failed to score; a story that has been too common this year.  But two separate five run innings helped us forget that failure quickly.  Bryant stayed hot.  Rizzo went back to back with him.  Jay looked very good in that leadoff spot.  Quintana looked a little shaky, again, including an ugly error, and Baez had a few wayward throws, but we can’t have it all.  But we had enough, plenty of runs to bury these guys.

This Reds pitching is bad; my buddy is telling me historically bad.  And we get to see them 9 more times after this one?  Again, no excuses.

I was kind of pissed when Joe let Montgomery bat with the bases loaded, leaving my fantasy player Ian Happ on the bench, but then he goes ahead and doubles in two runs.  Nice to have a guy like him, especially when you have a starter struggling just to make it through five; nice to have that guy to bridge the gap to the back of the pen.  Could he be starting?  Sure, here or elsewhere, but here, he is much more valuable in this role.

Just waiting for the game to finish before posting this.  Bottom of the 8th; hoping to get Jay one more AB to get a chance at the cycle.  They intentionally walked him last time up; what BS!  Heyward lead off walk.  Javy BOOM.  Guess the Cubs aren’t done yet.  15-5 now.  Where did the Reds find these bullpen guys?  Oh damn, that’s Scooter on the mound for them.  Too bad Jay couldn’t do the same; the longest cycle drought for a franchise continues.  But Tommy extends to get to KB; this should be fun.  Now he brings in Happ…ok ok.  My fantasy baseball team needs you.  Guess I’ll take that 1 point HBP; crap!

Three outs to go, and then the singing in Wrigley can begin.  I like Grimm.  Damn Votto is good, but I still remember when he said he hates the Cubs.  Wonder how he likes us now?  That 4 outfield setup on D couldn’t even contain this guy.  He is a professional hitter.  Walking guys…up 10 runs…really?  JD just stole my triple play prediction.  Finally got an out; 2 left.  Remember that game Scooter went deep 4 times?  Whew…barely got him.  On your feet Cubs fans.  Up to their backup catcher…and that’ll do it.

Thanks boys for making Monday Fun Day.  Hey Chicago what do you say?  Go Cubs!

The Cubs flying the W always makes things better. It sucks when they lose, especially because of how tight the nl central is right now. No way should the Cubs not Win the division. There should be no excuses but always can be. The Cubs have a favorable schedule from here on out. Nothing should stop them from making a 3rd consecutive postseason. Playing the reds helps. They are not a good team. 2 more series with them after this one should mean Wins for the Cubs. No matter who Maddon decides to lead off, it should not matter. Jay has been great. KB came home and stayed hot with another dinger. Rizzo went back to back and then Javy had another blast. If he could be a little more patient at the plate, he would be really dangerous. Way to start the homestand Cubbies! Keep Winning series and get on a roll. A little breathing room in the nl central would be nice. We can sweat games out in the postseason! GO CUBS GO!!!
