August 13, 2017: Not Looking Back

posted in: Cubs | 1

When Jake said that a couple weeks ago, about not looking back… about taking the NL Central lead and running with it, he was right… until after Saturday’s game.  Yes, we were still percentage points in first place, so technically he was correct, but the Cardinals had pulled even.  Yes, the Cardinals!!!  Man, is that how bad we’ve sucked this year?  Anyways, he took the mound Sunday in Arizona to help ensure that although we may have had to see somebody next to us, we won’t see anybody in front of us…

He pitched very well; my fantasy team thanks him as well.  By the way, I’ve been struggling big time in fantasy baseball this year.  However, even at 7-11, I still have a chance at the playoffs.  That’s the good news; that and the fact that my team has won 4 out of the past 5 weeks for that late season surge.  The bad news is that I play the top 2 teams in the final 3 weeks of the season; good luck to me.  By the way, Jake, feel free to throw in a no hitter any time you want.

It wasn’t a no hitter, but it was plenty good enough, as the Cubs salvaged the series, and avoided dropping 4 straight series.  And yes, with the Cardinals loss, the Cubs are all alone in first place again.  Jake had some help.

How good was Kris Bryant this weekend?  Damn.  Now that’s the MVP that we’ve been missing.  He has all the talent to put us on his back and carry us into the playoffs.  With Willson out, the person who immediately stepped up was KBoom.  Great, great hitting, and as always, great base running by the big man.  He helped give the Cubs the early lead.  It was someone else who put it away.

Baez go boom!  Wow, was that a home run.  I know, I know… I get pissed at him too.  Swinging at all those bad pitches, making the occasional bonehead defensive play… but the flip side of that are these type of big hits.  That home run was absolutely demolished.  Plus, all the phenomenal plays he makes on defense.  It’s Good Javy vs Bad Javy.  Personally, I’d love to see him have a bit more plate discipline.  Then, we can enjoy more moments like the one he provided yesterday.  The kid can hit a ton.  Let them come to you Javy.  We’ve seen what you can do.  We want to see that on a more consistent basis.  Can you be consistently phenomenal?

Then Happ went deep to go back to back.  I just throw him in there because he is on my fantasy team also; thanks Ian.  Quick note to Joe:  please play Ian the rest of the year… no rest.  Or, if you do rest him, bring him in the game in a pinch hitting role with runners on base.  Thank you.

And thank you Cubs, for getting this win.  You know, losing is just not acceptable around here any more… unless you’re a Sox fan; they still have another year of this to go.  But for us, you bring us the holy grail, and now, we expect it again; damn fans.

But seriously, we know we’re better than this.  At the very least, we know we’re better than the Cardinals; they suck.  So, if you can, let’s make this last 7+ weeks the best part of the season.  It’s all in front of us.  No need to look back, only ahead.  Go Cubs!!!

Jake has been very good since the break. The Cubs need him and the rest of the pitching staff to finish strong and make a 3rd straight postseason. It sucks that the red turds are right there with us, but they have been hot. Any type of long winning streak can get you right in the middle of the race. Maybe if the Cubs can reel off 8-10 in a row, they can build a cushion. Javy had the big 3run bomb followed by Happ’s solo shot. KB finished things off with a solo shot of his own. Wow, what a series and road trip he had! 13 of 15 times on base vs the snakes. He continues to get on base with hits and walks…good for a .400+ on-base percentage. Power and rbi’s have been slow lately, but that is going to come around without a doubt. KB can definitely carry the Cubs since he does it all, and with his average approaching .300, hopefully he continues his hot streak to help the Cubs stay on top and not look back! GO CUBS GO!!!
