August 11, 2018: Grand Finale

Championship Saturday was here.  It was Cubs vs Red Sox… maybe a World Series preview?  Game on!

The Red Sox had a new coach this year; he was cool.  Out of all the teams, I think his team made the most strides.  Most importantly, his team had the 2nd highest attendance next to ours.  It was appropriate that we were matched up in the last game of the season.

For the 100th time, we don’t keep score in these games.  Every kid bats every inning.  If there is an out recorded, the kid still stays out there to run the bases.  But… there are kids who ask if we won the game, and of course, I have a way to unofficially keep score.  The best way to do that in my opinion is to keep track of the number of outs we record on defense.  Based on this method, we were 11-0-1 this year.  We have never trailed in a game.  The one game we tied, the other team recorded 3 outs in the last inning to tie us.  We were up to bat first in this game.

The batting order isn’t anything scientific.  We will either go in number or name order, either forward or backward.  This game, we went in number order.  The jerseys are passed out by size; the lowest numbers are the smallest size.  Our #1 was a 3 year old who just turned 4 a couple weeks ago.  He was pretty good for his age.  In the first at bat, he hit one about five feet.  He then proceeded to lift up the bat in the air, giving a big smile, before throwing the bat on the ground; he then began to zig zag towards first base.  One of the kids caught the ball cleanly and fired to first base accurately.  The kid at first base caught the ball because it hit him in the stomach; one out.

When they recorded the first out in the game, their coach seemed extra pumped.  He gave ME a big smile, and was clapping his hands.  I was stunned for a second.  We’re losing a game?  The championship game at that?  Then I switched modes.  I told one of our other coaches… I see they’re pretty happy about that… ramping up the competition today are we?  Haha…

If you read the last post, you know my son is at 1st base every 1st inning.  We recorded an out quickly to “tie the game”.  The rest of the inning was full of near misses, until the last batter.  The kid hit a shot that deflected off one of our  kids on the pitching mound; my son came off first base, scooped it up, and raced to the bag; 2nd out!  We were up 2-1.

The final score ended up being 4-2 in our favor; when we put our hands in the middle after this game, we said 1,2,3… Champions!

My son may have been a little down about only getting 2 outs in the first inning, coming off his 5 out performance in the previous game.  But, he certainly made up for it at the plate.  Last game, he didn’t do his best at the plate.  He saved his best for last.  If I had to rank his top 5 hits of the year, he got 3 of them in this game.  Crushed the ball of the tee, and then connected twice of my pitching; all 3 balls made it to the grass.  He was so happy; again, I was so proud.  My wife was there for this one, and got a good recording of his final hit; not only did I have to lean out of the way, but it almost took a kid’s head off.  I’d like to think my son elevated his game on the big stage; love it!

It was a grand finale; another baseball season in the books.  What will next year hold for us?  A change in age group for sure… will my coaching career continue?  Will we be back at this park district?  All questions for a later time; it’s time to savor this one.  Congrats little Cubbies!

Congratulations on the championship! Maybe not another defensive gem from my nephew in this one, but it sure sounds like he did it with the bat this time. Thanks for the video of the last one, too…it was smoked! Moving on up next year. Hopefully, you get a chance to head coach whether there or somewhere else. Enjoy title for now and worry about that next year. GO CUBS GO!!!
