August 10, 2019: Closing Chapter

There were many reasons I wanted to play this last game. First off, not taking our only win of the season on a forfeit; that just wasn’t happening. Getting another chance to get these kids on the field together for one last time was one of the main reasons; I wonder if the kids felt this way. The parents wanted to do an end of season BBQ too; it would have sucked to do that without an actual game. Finally, I wanted to see my son pitch again; he’s been asking me for the last few games. I told him he would pitch in THIS game. I wasn’t disappointed in that.

He’s really taken to pitching. He didn’t want to at first, but I made him do it; it’s like that with most things at this point. We’ll throw him into anything and see how he likes it. Well, the minute he got done pitching his first inning, he wanted to do it again. We practiced his motion. He takes the step back, puts his arms over his head, shifts forward, and fires that left handed pitch at like 3/4 release. He really gets into it; I love it. He was on his game in this one. First batter, he went full count, and lost him; coach came in, and the kid struck out. 2nd kid he struck out on his own. These kids weren’t the bottom of the order. He was going through the top of the order. The next kid got a hit that turned into that classic little league home run. What should have been a double at most, turned into a home run. He struck out the next kid on his own too. I was loving it, knowing I’m looking at our number one pitcher going into next season.

The BBQ was good too; hot dogs, chips, cookies, watermelon, juice boxes, water. All the kids sitting in the grass talking with each other; you wouldn’t be able to tell what the result of the game was. As the “picnic” ended, some of the kids went back on the field, and played some wiffle ball with the bat & ball my son wanted to bring to this game. We were out there for another hour after it was all said and done. Again, that’s what it’s all about.

Oh yeah, the game… if you haven’t guessed by now, we lost 8-4. We did jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning; my son got on and scored one of the runs. We were primed to score more, but then the first play that lead to our demise happened. Our kid hit a great shot, but it was caught in the air; we got doubled off, and they got out of the inning only giving up 2 runs. They scored 3 runs in their half to take a 3-2 lead. The 2nd inning was scoreless across the board. We couldn’t score in the 3rd inning, which hurt, while they put up a 4 spot in their half. That inning showed just how much a game of inches baseball is. Three plays cost us. Our pitcher caught a ground ball, but bounced it to first… right through the first baseman’s legs. Line drive which would have been a double play glanced off our kid’s glove. Then an easy grounder went right through one of our player’s legs. We only gave up one other run… that little league home run. One final play that hurt us was one of our kids being tagged out coming home by the pitcher who fielded the ball. We put up 2 runs in the top of the 6th, but it wasn’t enough.

I asked the kids if they had fun after the game; they all said yes. I told them good luck in school, and to keep playing baseball. This may have been the closing chapter to this year, but the book is still being written. Until next year…
