I wanted to write about a Cubs win, and after Kyle dominated the Cardinals again in St. Louis, I got the chance… but I didn’t have time, so the next game was played, and the Cardinals smacked us 8-0. I was really hoping to leave St. Louis in first place… but have no fear, the Cubs returned home after that drubbing. Home is where good things happen.
But yeah, my timing hasn’t been good with the blogs as of late… but that’s OK. Let’s go back to St. Louis for a minute. It was Ian Happ who would get the go ahead single in the 6th inning of that Hendricks victory. Yeah, that surprised me. I know a lot of people have been calling for Happ to come back up to the big league club, but why? OK, so he can’t be worse than Addison Russell has been is your answer maybe, but Happ hasn’t really been good. He’s went through hot streaks in the minors, but then you wouldn’t hear about him for a couple weeks, which I assume is the time he went through a down streak. I’m sure there are ups and downs at every level, and I want Happy to do good, but… I just figured he’d be a September call up. I do like the timing of his call up in St. Louis, which is where I believe he made his major league debut, and did well if my memory serves me correct. Nice to see him get this big hit. Then it was El Mago time…

Nobody does the stuff he does, especially on the base paths… nor should they for that matter. It’s not exactly the stuff you want to teach the youth, but Javy’s base running prowess is unmatched. In this one, he was hung out to dry between 2nd and 3rd; why Wieters just didn’t run at him, I don’t know… but I’m guessing he’s just lazy. Instead he looks at him, then fires the ball to 2nd base after Javy flinched that way. Dumb move, which was compounded by the fact the ball went into center field, and allowed Javy to come around and score…. Presto Change-o! Yeah, we’ve seen this movie before… his aggressiveness on the basepaths is rewarded more times than not. I guess there lies the lesson. Be smart, but be aggressive… and if it’s not always “smart”, the aggressiveness puts that pressure on the opposing defense, and they will crack. Thanks Wieters.
So there, I DID get to talk about that win in St. Louis. By the way, the Cardinals are Hendricks’ bitch… you see those numbers he has against them? My god… Dominating. Still can’t believe I acquired him in my fantasy baseball league for Chris Bassitt and Michael Chavis…. who both ended up being cut; I picked Bassitt back up too. Hendricks, Bassitt… that matchup has a nice ring to it… we’ll get there. Much more to talk about first. Go Cubs!
