August 1, 2018: Box of Surprises

So yeah, summer has been busy.  Lots of vacation time, lots of family time, busy at work, busy at home… probably no different than a lot of folks.  But just because I haven’t been posting in a while, doesn’t mean I haven’t been in touch with Chicago sports the whole way.  I have been… and now I need to catch up.

As part of the catch up, I’m going to intertwine some family stories with Chicago sports.  We’ve been to a bunch of games this year; I always talk about those… but more than that.  This “hobby” of mine is much more than that; it’s a big part of my life, and in turn is a big part of my family’s lives too.  My wife has to deal with it all… she embraces most of it.  My son has no choice right now, but he really does seem to enjoy it.  Of course, it didn’t only start there…

Growing up, sports were a big part of our daily lives.  Following our teams was a constant.  There was always lots of stuff going on, but there was always one eye on what was going on with the Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, and yes, even the Sox.  Of course my Dad was a big part of that; my Mom embraced most of it.  It was common talk with all of my family and friends.  We talked about it at school, at the park, and then eventually at work.  I still do today, obviously…

I’ll start this August catch up feature with one story.  During the Bulls run of the 90s, my aunts really got into it.  When we would go over there, I would see the VHS tapes full of Bulls games; I thought it was so cool.  They had tons of Bulls stuff too.  They loved Phil Jackson, and of course, Michael Jordan.  My one aunt, who got my other aunt really into it, passed away probably about 20 years ago at this point.  She was awesome.  My other aunt lives in Colorado now; she came to visit a couple weeks ago.

She was in for the family picnic; we weren’t able to make it.  So, we got together for something to eat during the week.  We checked out this chicken place we’ve been wanting to try; Honey Butter Chicken was pretty damn good.  She wanted to come by after dinner; I knew why.

She had told me she had some stuff for me.  The year before, she gave me my aunt’s old Bulls starter jacket; yes, it does fit me… barely, but it does.  I wore it to a Bulls game last year.  Now, she had a box of surprises for me.

We came into our house, and started going through the box.  There they were… all those Bulls tapes.  The 91 finals, the 92 finals, the 93 finals, the 69 point game, the double nickel game, post game coverage and interviews… oh my.  There were newspapers, magazines, books.  It was a walk down 1990 Bulls memory lane.

I thanked her .  I told her this stuff was safe with me.  I have my stash of course, and now I have this.  She said she wants to watch the tapes with me.  I told her whenever she wants, to come on over, stay in our basement, and we’ll load them up.  Now I only need to buy a VCR player…

Or you could find a place to turn those VHF tapes into DVD’s. Then when she comes back, you could watch them all without looking for, or buying a VCR! Don’t forget that priceless shelf-decorator with 23,33, and 99!!!

An old Chicago Bulls treasure chest…hahaha. Pretty sWeet how all that stuff has been kept and is now being passed down. No better decade for Chicago sports than the 1990s, too! Converting from VHF to DVD/Blueray sounds like the way to go. Going to have to check out that Bulls memorabilia this weekend!
