April 9, 2023: The Man is Rahm

The Masters concluded late Sunday after delays on both Friday and Saturday.  Koepka wasn’t able to hold on to the lead he started the round with, as Jon Rahm took the lead and ran with it, eliminating any late drama on his way to the Green Jacket.  At least I had a little something something on him.

I thought Hovland would me by best chance for a decent pay day.  One minute he was in the thick of it, the next minute when I checked back in, he was off the leaderboard.  What the heck Vic?  46 to 1 would have been pretty sweet.  180-1 would have been sweeter.  Those were the odds I got on Phil Mickelson between rounds 2 and 3 I believe.  He stormed up the leaderboard on Sunday, settling in behind Rahm.  At that point, I hoped Rahm would implode, dropping a few strokes to end up tied with Phil.  Not sure what the tiebreaker is for the Masters.  Some of them play a hole, some a few holes, and I believe there is one where you go a whole round.  No such luck.  An 8-1 mid-tourney bet on Rahm helped offset some of those dollar bets I had out there.

I was happy Tiger made the cut; one of the bets in play was for him to finish top 20.  Just making the cut didn’t give me a lot of hope, but the possibility still existed.  As round 3 began, that possibility dwindled.  He would finish the weather delayed round at +9.  On Sunday morning, he announced he was withdrawing (WD) from the remaining holes.  He did look pretty bad out there, limping around.  He said it was his plantar fasciitis.  My brother in law believes that if he could use a cart, instead of walking 72 holes in 4 days, Tiger would be in contention; I guess we’ll never know.  It would have been nice if he snuck in the top 20.

It would have been nice if there was some drama down the stretch too.  It was a pretty boring ending, unless you were Rahm.  I’m sure walking up those fairways down the stretch was pretty cool, all those people cheering you on; a major championship at Augusta a few shots away.  The level these guys play at… it’s impressive.  The precision, the pressure; it’s all on you.  I guess it helps to have a good caddy too; they get a nice chunk if their guy wins.

OK, well, no more golf for a while; guess I’ll be paying attention to the next major when it comes around.  I’ll have a better idea of the golfers out there too.  It’s amazing what betting on a sport does.  Before this, I knew very few of the golfers out there; now, I know many more of them.  Now, I have a chance to lose money betting on another sport; yay!  See you at the next major.
