It doesn’t happen much; maybe it should happen more regularly. Life gets busy man… no excuse. Well, these “boys” I still do see on a regular basis, except it’s on a family level. When I see my father, it’s with my mother; makes sense. When I see my brother, it’s either at work, or with our families; again, makes sense. Those are the times that are more important anyways; getting the families together is always fun. Yet, how often do us 3 get to hang out JUST us 3? Not too often. So when we went to the UC to watch the Hawks game on Thursday night, it was the first time in a while; it was good to have a boys’ night.
First off, I’d like to thank the Hawks for sucking. Sure, would we have liked the Hawks to win on this evening, heck, at least score one fricking goal… yes, heck yes. But, the one good thing about your team being in the gutter is that tickets are cheap again! Yeah, $78 to get us all in the UC. For most of the last decade, you couldn’t get 1 ticket for that price. So yeah, thank you for making this evening out a little cheaper. Still, they couldn’t muster one goal… at home… against the Kraken??? Well, we couldn’t have everything on this night…
The evening started somewhere none of us have ever been: a cigar lounge. Yeah, normally it’s special occasion to spark up a stogie; I had kind of started to smoke them on a semi-regular basis. My brother and I spent an hour in the cigar shop in our building downtown; fun. We had to find somewhere close to the UC; we did. We found a spot right across the street, walked in, picked out our unique cognac infused cigar, and headed to the back room. There were 3 guys already chilling there, and an hour plus of guys’ talk started. You know, guys’ talk? Yeah, you don’t have to worry about offending anybody, you can talk shit about anybody, even the people sitting there with you, and nobody gives a rat’s ass. Yeah, it was a wide range of topics that certainly could not be discussed in front of our families… haha. It was such a good time, that, damn, we have to get going…
Next up was our normal pre-UC spot, Billy Goat’s. Free parking for one, as long as there’s an available spot, which there just so happened to be right in front of the entrance, even though we were late. Had to get those “cheap eats and drinks” before heading into the inflated UC price-land. 2 triples, a double, fries, pickles, onions, and of course some beers… we had to shovel it down if we wanted to get to the UC before the anthem, one of the highlights of being in attendance. I still remember those anthems during the Cup years… talk about electric; it still is pretty cool. We already missed the Marion Hossa signing of a 1 day contact in the UC atrium so that he could retire a Hawk; we saw him during the game, but we can’t miss the anthem. We hustled down Madison, and got to our seats out of breath, just as Cornelison took the ice. Perfect.
Yes, it was a pretty good night; if the Hawks won, maybe perfect? That was the least of our worries on this night. Coming home not drunk was definitely higher priority than that; mission accomplished btw. Yeah, this boys’ night could also be called a father-son night; to be able to interchange the two, for both of those definitions to be completely 100% accurate, is pretty special. Until the next time… love you guys.
