There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home. The Cubs started their home schedule off on the same foot they started the regular season off: a resounding win. This time it was 10-0 over the hapless Pirates. Yes, it will be the Pirates and Reds battling it out for last place in the division. They’ll still be pains in our asses no doubt, but when all the dust settles, they will be at the bottom.
The real question is where will we be. It was nice to follow the same pattern with how the regular season opened, but that’s it; the changes must start now. The bullpen was actually very good in this one, having to pitch 7 innings after Lester was pulled; hope that he’s OK or else we may see the return of Chatwood for a start. That could be a good thing, meaning, that would probably be the last time we’d ever see him pitch in a Cubs uniform. I hear they have a locker for Tyler ready next to Carl down in Iowa. Like I said, I hate to see anybody fail; I root for every single guy on the Cubs to do well. Fact is, that he has not done well, as we all know. We can give him every chance/benefit of the doubt possible, but there comes a point where we need to cut our losses, even if it’s an expensive loss. But yes, the bullpen did not allow a run in this one; that was a very pleasant surprise.
Logically thinking by looking at last year’s performance, the bullpen is a lot better than they’ve been. Yet, can we expect the same guys to be as good as they were? I know it’s not an ideal plan, but filling the bullpen is probably the easiest thing to do on the fly. Hell, bring up any warm body from the minors to pitch an inning or two; they can’t do worse than the guys who have been up here. At the same time, you don’t want to pull the plug on these guys too early. Yes, sending Carl down was warranted, and Tyler may be next, but after that, I think it would take a lot more to get somebody else out of here. Secondly, there will come a point in the season where we can acquire some bullpen help; I’m sure the boys are already analyzing this. Is part of the answer signing Kimbrel? I wouldn’t mind it of course. Morrow will be back at some point; he was good when healthy. Good to see them take a positive step in this one.

It helped in this one that the Pirates booted the ball around. Still, like I said, we’re going to have to win games every which way. Sure, it’s nice to win 10-0; I wasn’t even that stressed out up 10 runs… figuring the bullpen couldn’t blow that lead could they? Point is, we’re going to have to win a lot of close low scoring games.
Great to see the Cubs back on the field at Wrigley. Great to see the first of the Wrigley Field wins; hoping there’s much more where that came from. Wouldn’t it be great to go 60-21 at home this year? Go Cubs!
