April 8, 2019: The Power of Home

It’s Opening Day at Wrigley Field today.  Yeah, about 9 games too late, but we finally made it to the home opener.  It couldn’t come soon enough.  Will the return to Wrigley equal a win to start a streak of wins?

How much can home field advantage really help when a team is struggling?  Do you think the Pirates care about that?  Do you think their starter, and member of my fantasy baseball team, Jameson Taillon cares that we’re down, and need this return to Wrigley to provide some much needed Ws?  No; I wouldn’t expect them to.  But we care.  How much power do we have?  When the Cubs run on that field at 1:20pm, what can we do to help?  I’m already trying…

After Friday night’s debacle, I changed out the American flag in front of our house with the Cubs flag; the Cubs flag usually flies during the summer, but I thought I’d get it up early to try to change the mojo.  Presto, change-o, the Cubs won.  I felt somewhat responsible for that win.  I know, they didn’t win Sunday; the flag is still flying in front.  But hey, it’s something right?  With the home opener today, of course I selected a Cubs shirt to wear to work; I wanted to wear a hat too.  I broke out the gold trimmed classic Cubs hat with the 2016 World Series trophy on the side of it.  I usually reserve that hat for going to the games, especially a road game, but figured I’d wear it today with the hope of it bringing our boys some luck this afternoon.  You see, I’m trying…

Yet, I’ve never been to a home opener; it’s definitely on my bucket list.  With the recent release of my son’s 2020 Spring Break week, next year may be the year…  I am planning on watching a bit; I’ll definitely be following along on my phone.  I was looking at going to our first game at Wrigley in a couple weeks, but if this losing continues, I may need to try to get there sooner… see, always thinking of another way I can help my team.

Yeah, that’s what we do; not much more we can do as fans.  We rely on our rituals, we support our team, we hope to make them feel supported, both on the road, and like today, in the cathedral itself.  Like I said in my previous post, they need to really hear us today; we need them to feel it… we need them to feel the power of home.  We need them to believe, that playing in front of us at home makes a difference, both today and for the rest of the season.  This is OUR home.  I want to see that W flag flying later this afternoon.  I want to hear the crowd sing Go Cubs Go; yeah, I know it’s a bit corny, but I still like it!  I want to see the Cubs start moving up the standings on that division flag pole.  It begins today.  I’m feeling like it’s Opening Day all over again… Go Cubs!!!
