Don’t worry… I’m OK. Yeah, that Schwarber injury was a blow… but we move on. But before we leave the topic, let’s talk about injuries. Let’s talk about the biggest injuries in Chicago sports history.
I’m trying to do this from memory, so I may be missing some. Keep me honest. I’m going to try to rank them too. Here we go:
10. Kane Out
Remember when Patrick Kane got hurt and we thought all was done? I remember listening to all the sports talk radio shows. That was scary. But yes, he returned in the postseason and helped the Hawks raise another cup. It was bad when it happened, but turned out pretty well
9. Urlacher’s Arm
This one helped lead to the Bears decline that year. I can’t remember all the details… I just remember when Brian went down the Bears were nowhere near the same team, and they ended up losing more than they won. It sucks to lose a key player.
8. Schwarber Goes Down
Yes, the most recent injury will take our #8 slot. It’s ranked 8 for now… this injury could climb depending on how the Cubs continue this hyped up season. A brutal blow 3 games into the season, but since it’s 3 games into the season, there is a lot of baseball left… basically the whole year. Will the Cubs be able to do it without him?
7. Jordan Breaks Ankle
Yes, that Jordan. If you recall, in year 2 with the Bulls, MJ broke his ankle and missed almost the entire year. He came back and fought with coaches and management about a minutes limit. His return to the team prompted the Bulls to make a charge down the stretch and sneak into the playoffs as the 8 seed. They would face the mighty Celtics in Round 1, and MJ would go off for 63 in the Garden in a historic performance. The fact that MJ came back from this injury, and led the Bulls to dynasty level, is why this ranks so low… maybe it shouldn’t even be on the list…. kind of like the Kane injury.
6. Rose Injures Knee… Again
The 2nd of the major injuries to Rose’s knee, and the 2nd of 3 key injuries that have killed this current Bulls team. After just returning from the first one, Rose went down in Portland. He would miss the rest of the year. We’ll talk more about him later.

5. Noah Out for the Year
Yes, this is the final injury of the trilogy. This coupled with the bad decisions led the Bulls to one of their most disappointing seasons. Firing Thibs, benching Noah, then losing Noah would effect the Bulls more than anyone could imagine. Taking the heart and soul from this Bulls team led to a horrific year. I just hope we see Jo in a Bulls uniform again.
4. Prior Donezo
After the 2003 season was over, and the dust and pain settled, the Cubs were still picked to do great things. They weren’t as much as a World Series favorite, but with Prior, Wood, and Zambrano, this Cubs team was picked for big things. They flopped, and Prior was never himself again. A series of arm injuries ended Mark Prior’s career. What seemed like such a bright future after an unbelievable year in 2003, turned out to be nothing, and was a key to this Cubs team failing to reach the postseason in the subsequent years.
3. Sayers Knees
Knees seem to be a common theme here. Unfortunately, the first to experience a serious knee injury was the Kansas Comet, Gale Sayers. If he had this injury today, he would have returned… maybe not as good as he was, but he would have come back on the field. As it stands, a great career was cut short. He still made it to the HOF… imagine if he had stayed healthy.
2. Rose Tears ACL
I remember it clearly. The Bulls were the 1 seed for the 2nd straight year, and were putting the finishing touches on their first playoff victory. Then it happened. After this moment, Rose and the Bulls would never be the same again. This Bulls team should have been adding to the trophy case. Instead, years later they are empty handed, and are on the verge of missing the playoffs for the first time in 8 years. Brutal.
- McMahon Gets Slammed
The punky QB was never the same after the GB goon slammed him to the hard artificial turf at Soldier Field. It was the year after the Super Bowl, and the Bears were really good again. The defense actually was statistically better than the famous year before. They finished 14-2 I believe… and were ready for another playoff run. But without their QB, and the decisions that would follow… choosing Flutie… the Bears would get knocked out by the Skins, and the dream of a repeat, and eventually dynasty, would be over. There were other factors, but this injury was one of the biggest.
So there’s my list. Tell me the ones I missed. There may be some of those, and that’s fine. However, I definitely don’t want to add any new ones to this list any time soon… Let’s stay healthy out there boys.
MK
Ronnie Fields in a car crash that broke his neck. Who knows where this Chicago boy would have ended up, but he was a high flyer with kg in high school.
Jay Cutler sitting out the nfc championship 2nd half vs a beatable gb team, not to mention a few other injuries he had to miss multiple games and cost the Bears shots at winning.
Toews missing a 3rd of the 2012 season with a concussion. He returned for the playoffs, but the Hawks were ko’d by the yotes, and Toews was never fully 100%.
Big Hurt and Mags going down mid-year for the rest of the 04 season…10 games over .500 before the injuries, 6 games under after.
Kerry Wood having tommy john surgery in 99 that led to him having multiple injuries after that.
