So you think you know baseball? Maybe you think you´re an expert… a DR maybe? If you really know baseball, then you should know all about one of the hotbeds of baseball… you should know about the place where countless MLB stars originate. This DR doesn´t stand for doctor… it stands for the Dominican Republic.
How many MLB players were born in the DR? I don´t have time to look that up right now, but I know it´s a bunch. Maybe the first one that comes to mind is Big Papi. He has 2 rings, tainted some may say, but still. He has been a great player, and according to one of our waiters, a hero. I thought the waiter was related to him by the way he emphatically rattled off his name and team. Or maybe the Dominican players that you know of play for the New York Yankees… a very popular team down here. Ever see the movie Sugar? Check it out, it´s pretty decent. Robinson Cano comes to mind, although now he´s playing on the west coast up in Seattle.
But what are we about here? I don´t want to talk about these other MLB teams. I want to talk about Chicago, and when it comes to baseball, the Chicago Cubs. Oh yeah, maybe you can name a few Dominicans that have played for the Cubs?
As my son and I wear our Cubs hats, and once people find out I´m from Chicago, the conversation begins. Yes, it´s in half English half Spanish, with my mother in law translating, but there are 2 words that are known in either language: Sammy Sosa, who by the way, has a drink named after him down here. It´s pretty good, trust me.
He´s the number one guy that comes to mind, hands down. From a city about 2.5 hours from Punta Cana, he was the man. Yeah, I know he had a rough ending as a Cub.. even I “disowned” him when he quit on the team, but come on… how many great memories did this guy supply for us Cubs fans? Countless. He was the man… for a long time, and yeah, like many before and after him, he was unable to bring the Cubs that title, but he sure provided a lot of joy. I say welcome him back already… let bygones be bygones; he was one of the all time great Cubs, period. Make it happen Theo.

He´s not the only one either. There are Cubs that were NOT Dominican that are known down here. One name that has been mentioned to me multiple times is none other than Ernie Banks. Yeah, and they knew about the “let´s play two” too. It´s pretty cool to be thousands of miles from home and have something in common with people…. people that don´t even speak the same language.
Oh, there are other Dominicans that play for this present Cubs team too. Our waiter this morning at breakfast was neighbors with Junior Lake, whom he referred to as his brother, and yeah, he knows Starlin Castro too. Not only that, this guy rattled off half the Cubs roster to me… in English. I want to take him home with me…haha. My brother from another, Cubs fan at heart… it truly is the best time of year.
And as my son wanted to rattle off the Bulls roster to him, he mentions that he has 2 sons of his own, with another on the way. And one of his sons is the same age as mine… and guess what… all he wants to do is play baseball. Maybe another star is being born?
I hear there´s kids playing baseball all over the place down here… the guys that work here that played baseball growing up. It´s not soccer down here, it is baseball! I love that… because it´s baseball season… because I love baseball… because I´m in one of the best spots for baseball in the world. What more can you ask for? How about some of these guys helping bring a championship home to the Cubs? Yeah, that will work, and then I´ll know that there will be somebody else celebrating thousands of miles from Chicago, and that´s pretty cool.
