April 7, 2017: The Road to the Playoffs

posted in: Bulls | 1

OK, let me take a break from the Cubs for a second.  After all, we have some playoffs coming up in Chicago.  That’s right.  Not one, like we knew we’d have, but TWO playoff series will be beginning shortly.  The Hawks have clinched the number one seed, and have one game to go; see you soon playoffs.  The Bulls.. the road to the playoffs has been a little more interesting.

They’ve won 5 of their last 6 games to bring their record to 39-40.  Yeah, I know it’s not that impressive, the overall record, but it could have been a lot worse.  They’ve been playing decent basketball.  And owning the tie breakers with both Indiana and Miami, it would take a miracle for them NOT to make the playoffs.  OK, maybe not a miracle, but it’s just about a sure thing.  But just saying that, watching the Bulls all year… maybe I shouldn’t have said that.

We’re tied with Indiana.  They’ll need to do 1 game better than us in the last 3 games we both have.  We have Brooklyn on the road, and Orlando and Brooklyn at home.  I know it’s not Toronto, or a Thursday night TNT game at the UC, but I have to like our chances in those 3.  Saying we blow one of them, Indiana would have to go 3-0.  They have Orlando and Philly on the road, and Atlanta at home.  OK, so I guess that COULD happen.  But that’s OK… Miami is the one that would have to leapfrog us to make the playoffs, while ending our season.

The Heat have 4 games left.  Tonight at Toronto, then at Washington, then at home against Cleveland, then finally at home against Washington.  They easily have the toughest schedule remaining.  So if the Bulls blow one of the easy ones, Miami would have to go 4-0 in these 4 games to take the 8 seed.  OK, the Cavs may rest their whole team, but the Raptors and Wizards won’t right?  I think we can all agree that going 4-0 is a tough task.

The Bulls don’t have to worry about any of this if they take care of business, and win their last 3 games.  42-40 is just about right for this team.  Some say we’re living in NBA hell.  Good enough to make the playoffs, bad enough not to be relevant when we get there.  I agree, but… making the playoffs is important I think.  I’ve said it numerous times; the Bulls should be embarrassed if they can’t make the playoffs in the East with this roster.  It was embarrassing last year; we look like that will be avoided this year.

So we get there, then what?  An 8 seed would get us a date most likely with the Cavs.  The 7 seed will send us to Boston.  Does anybody really think we have a shot in a 7 game series against those teams?  If it was a short 5 game series like back in the day, maybe… but to beat those teams 4 times… in the playoffs?  4-0 against the Cavs in the regular season doesn’t mean much.  2-2 vs the Celtics means about as much.  Still, it will be exciting to watch the Bulls in the playoffs… at least for a little bit.

But what if?  Yeah, you know, I have to go there.  What if the Bulls were to pull off an upset of one of those 2 teams?  Just think about that for a minute.  Not likely, but… if they knocked out say the Cavs in the first round… why couldn’t they win the East?  Again, not likely, just saying.  Until then, let’s take care of business against these scrubs that we’ve struggled with all year.  Then, we can dream.  Go Bulls!

Bhawks wrap up their regular season already knowing that they are the top team in the west…a great 82 games for sure. The road to the 4th Cup begins mid next week. Get your shave on and be ready to beard it up!
Bulls wrap up their regular season in a week. How will they finish? Playoffs looking like a lock but strange things have been happening all year for this club. Yes, it would be nice to make the playoffs. Will it lead to anything else, probably not, but having a shot to upset is better than being on an early vacation.
The nhl and nba playoff roads will and should be heading to Chicago. Add that on top of Cubs and sox baseball, and it is a great time to be a Chicago sports fan. Rest up Bhawks and finish strong Bulls!
