April 5, 2015: Opening Night

posted in: Cubs | 0

Baseball season is finally here.  There isn’t much like Opening Day in the baseball season.  Springtime in Chicago is rolling around, baseball is about to begin, and the Cubs are undefeated.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

Of course that third part usually doesn’t last very long.  In fact, it doesn’t last that long for most teams.  With 162 games in a MLB season, there will be plenty of losses; there is no such thing as an undefeated team.  OK, well how about this:  every team is in first place.  This is true, and again, usually that doesn’t last too long; at least not for the Cubs.  But again, who cares?  I don’t care about that… not tonight.  Nothing can mess up tonight.

No, not even Wrigley Field NOT being ready.  No, not the fact that Kris Bryant will NOT be on the field on this night.  No, not the fact that the Bulls lost to Cleveland this afternoon.  No, not even an injury tonight… well, let’s not think about that.  Let’s not think of anything bad. It’s Opening Night and all is well in the world.

It’s one of the best days of the year.  I’m 38 years old and I’m genuinely excited for the first pitch tonight.  I guess some things never get old.  Surprisingly, I’ve never been to an opening day game.  I think that will be changing soon.  My 3 year old son obviously has not been to one either; we’ll be attending our first one together.  Maybe I waited too long to take him to his first Opening Day… I know another die hard that took his son to HIS first Opening Day when he was a couple days old; now that’s what I’m talking about!  You can never start them too early…

I feel all over the place today.  I can’t really focus on one thing.  It’s been busy… a busy weekend, but Sunday night is almost here.  Heck, I doubt the Blackhawks will get much play tonight; it’s Opening Night!

Yes, the upcoming Bulls and Blackhawks games will be a lot more important than the early season baseball that will be going on, and I will trade Cubs losses for playoff victories.  That’s another reason why this time of year is so good.  Playoffs in basketball, playoffs in hockey, and now baseball is back.  What time of the year is better than this?

The start of football season is pretty good too, especially when baseball is still meaningful.  Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case too often here in Chicago.  So, I go back to this time of year.  Baseball season is not over, in fact, it’s only just begun.  Hope springs eternal again.  Next year is here.

It’s only one game, yet you can’t find a cheap ticket.  You’ll pay $150 for a ticket that you’ll pay $15 for the 2nd game of the year.  It’s special.  It’s that special to watch it; I can’t wait to experience it in person.

Not tonight… not this year.  Maybe next year.  Will that be the same story for the Cubs again?  It’s not such a slam dunk answer this year, like it has been the last 3 years.  There’s no way to really tell how this Cubs team will do this year.  Yes, we all want to believe… playoffs, world series, champs.  It’s good to have that at least in the conversation again.  Whether not it happens doesn’t really matter tonight.

I’m not going to worry about that.  I’m done with pre-season predictions.  I’m done talking.  I’m done waiting.  Opening night is here, and I’m ready to enjoy it.
