April 4, 2016: 161 To Go

posted in: Cubs | 2

OK.  I can take off my Cubs jersey.  The first game is in the books.  And what do you know, it was a big W.  So when does the World Series start?

Just kidding… kind of.  This was the most anticipated start to a season that I can remember.  Putting back on my Cubs jersey for ths first time since that NLCS ending loss to the Mets, the excitement was very high.  Of course, we can’t stay at this level.  With Opening Day in the books, it’s time to settle in for the grind.  OK, the home opener will be pretty hype, but then we grind.

Yes, there will be important regular season games.  I hope to see some exciting stuff happen too.  Yes, winning rules all, but a no hitter here, and cycle there, a 3 HR performance here, a walk off victory there… all stuff that helps us get through the season.  But something tells me, we won’t need that much help during this 2016 season.

With an impressive out of the gate win, the expectations were served correct… at least for one game.  We ride this high until the next game.  If another win, we’ll ride it again.  If another win, we talk World series.  If a loss, we deal with our disappointment until the next game.  If another loss, we start panicking.  If another loss, the curse talk begins.  Yes, the life of a Cubs fan.

And this year will be no different… but it WILL be different.  I can’t ever remember being the World Series favorites.  I have to do a little research and see if this was ever the case.  So yes, this year is already different.  But we all hope the ending of this season is the difference definer.  Only 161 to go… regular season games that is…

Couple quick thoughts on Game 1.  I won’t… I can’t do this for every single game, but since it is the start of the season…  How about Jake for starters?  Is it even possible for him to be better than last year?  Yes, come postseason time if we make it, he can take it to the next level, but for regular season accomplishments?  That 2nd half was record breaking, and it looks like he picked right back up.  A one hitter until the 7th, his final inning of work of 7 shutout 2 hit frames.  Impressive stuff.  Love the strikeouts of Trout.  The hitters… the biggest thing was that we ran up their starter’s pitch count, and he was out after 5.  Then we piled on with the relievers.  This would be a nice blueprint for us to follow.  This blueprint will bring many of those coveted W’s.  Congrats to Miggy on the season’s first long ball too…. and Fowler’s big night…oh, and what about Matt Szczur with a bases clearing double in the 9th for his first AB of the season…  9-0 Cubs win?!?  Yep, baseball is back!

So the jersey comes off.. it gets hung up back in the closet.  My wife asked me today how many times will she have to wash this thing.. all my jerseys this year?  I reminded her that I don’t wear a jersey for every game… only some days, and to those games I attend of course, so I told her not to worry.  After all, it is a long season, and we’ve only just begun.  Go Cubs!

Cannot ask for a better way to start the year. 9 runs, only 1 long ball, just about everyone involved offensively, and jake picking up where he left off last year. Thank you Cubs for starting 2016 with a W! Game 2 tonight and I expect another Cubs W with lester leading the way. Hope he starts the year strong just like jake did last night. Think a few more long balls in store, too. GO CUBS GO!!!
