April 30, 2022: First Draft

posted in: Bears | 0

After not having any first round draft picks, and not trading up to get in the first round, the Bears would be taking their 6 draft picks over the next 2 days. I think we all know the needs, there are a lot of them. Top ones in my mind were WR, CB, and OL. OK, let’s go.

When watching the draft, I always look at who the best available player is, both overall and at the position I’m hoping the Bears take. These “experts” have to know more than me, especially about college football. I don’t watch a whole lot of college, and I certainly don’t watch tape of these guys; I know there are other guys out there that do. So, when a guy is taken that isn’t in the best available, I kind of wonder. When a guy is taken that most of these other people that do more research on the draft are upset about, I wonder. It never fails though; there will be opinions on both sides of the fence that will surface. Who really knows?

I do know that with the Bears first pick at 39 overall, CB Kyler Gordon certainly addressed a need. One of my friends sent me a text that he wasn’t happy about it… OK. At 48, we grabbed S Jaquan Brisker, not necessarily a top need, but it is in the secondary, so… can’t be too upset. When that same friend sent a text that said this guy reminds him of Mike Brown, and when I heard somebody on the radio say the same thing… wow… I loved Mike Brown, so… hope they’re right. The last pick of Day 2 was at 71, when the Bears went to another area of need, WR Velus Jones Jr; there was a lot of talking crap with that one, since many WRs deemed as better prospects were still available. Then I remember some other stuff I’ve heard about Poles and his team; they’re looking for certain types of players… high character guys… I can’t be mad about that, and I certainly don’t think “character” is going to swing the best available tag… we’ll see.

Day 3 was a busy one; the Bears turned their last 3 picks into… abracadabra… 8 picks! By trading down, Poles multiplied our remaining roster fillers; did we hit on any late round magic? An OT at 168 Braxton Jones addressed another area of need, as did OL Zachary Thomas at 186, C Doug Kramer at 207, and OL Ja’Tyre Carter at 226. So half the remaining picks spent on the offensive line; in theory, that feels good…. did they take the right guys? Time will tell us that. 174 brought us DE Dominique Robinson; never bad to add to the trenches. S Elijah Hicks at 254 made sense too; building up that secondary. RB Trestan Ebner at 203 and P Trenton Gill at 255 were curious, but whatever. How’d we do?

I haven’t seen the Bears getting A’s across the board or anything, but without a first round pick/picks, is that even possible? It’s Ryan Poles’ first draft; we have to stay open minded, bottom line. I’ll ask the question again: who really knows? I don’t know one guy from the next, but as far as addressing areas of need, I think we did OK; certainly feel like we’ll still need to sign another WR or two. Secondary got a nice boost; OL got some depth. From that perspective, I can’t be mad; if none of these picks hit, I certainly will be mad. What’s the measuring stick for success? 2 of the 3 Day 2 picks hitting? 2 of the 8 Day 3 picks hitting? What’s the definition of “hitting”? I look forward to finding out; Poles still has time to add to this roster. With the Hawks and Bulls done, and the Cubs hurting, there is one eye on the Bears already; there almost always is. Do we have something to look forward to? Always. Bear Down!!!
