April 30, 2019: The Pitcher

posted in: Cubs | 0

My son asked me the other day who my favorite baseball player of all time was. That was a good question. Of course I could name a dozen Cubs that I have loved over the years, but my all time favorite? I’d have to say Roger Clemens.

Back in my hey day, in little league, I was a pitcher; OK, I did pitch a little bit in high school too. Actually, I threw a 1 hitter in my first start. Ironically, the only kid that got a hit off me was my rival back in the day in little league; I think I may have shared that story. And how this same kid was there the night I met my wife; he actually asked her to dance before I did…she told him no. But back to the reason why I chose Clemens as my favorite player; my favorite players are pitchers because I was a pitcher. Clemens was the best pitcher of my era. Yeah, I know…steroids…still, he was my favorite.

Of course he’s not the only one. Two of my first favorites were Lamarr Hoyt and Rick Sutcliffe. Zambrano, Wood, and of course, Prior were all guys I loved; nobody could touch Prior for most of that 2003 season. I know it was short lived, but think he is my favorite, although Jake is definitely on that short list too. Similarly, he was untouchable for a good stretch there. Another guy from another team that I really liked was King Felix; he was on the mound for the Mariners as the Cubs began their short 2 game series in Seattle on Tuesday night.

It was a good pitching matchup. Hamels with the 5th most starts of active pitchers vs King Felix with the 4th most; I think I got that right. Ironically, #1 on that list CC Sabathia matched up against #3 Zack Greinke on this same night. That’s pretty cool. #2 by the way is Justin Verlander; #6 is Jon Lester. I was looking forward to watching the Cubs game, wishing I was there, sitting next to Theo, Eddie Vedder, and Chris Chelios. I would be on my couch for this one, sitting next to my wife, as I took in the action.

It was an entertaining game. Besides the pitching matchup, it didn’t take long to see some offense. Descalso went deep right out of the gate. Rizzo did the same after a Bryant double. Schwarber the same after a Contreras double. All of them were go ahead home runs. And what a fricking finish!!! Yes, it was definitely worth being tired at work tomorrow.

I wasn’t there, but I was there. What started as a classic pitching matchup, ended with some clutch pitching, and defense by the way, as the Cubbies pulled it out. And don’t look now, but Bryzzo is heating up… And if Schwarby gets going. I’m really liking the way the Cubs are playing. Nice timing…as we finish off the month of April, and after our last game in Seattle, will host the Cards. Every game matters! Go Cubs!
